This is the backyard of my aunts new place as taken from her back porch. It’s in the middle of the city, in the desert. Nice neighborhood is nice.
My mom and her siblings grew up along this creek when it was a LOT cheaper property, when my grandmother died and we sold the house it was flipped, remodeled and sold for 1.5 million. dayum.

That’s a real blessing to have that.
My wife’s great uncle grew up in a hunting cabin by a lake in Michigan. When he got older and successful, he bought up the land all around that house, and redid it to be a modern home (but still cabin style). Then, he built summer houses on the land for each of his daughters one by one so they and his grandchildren would have the summer memories by the lake that kids deserve. So many family reunions have been held there. When I was still dating my wife, they had the last one built wheelchair accessible so I could stay there, too. I’m still grateful for that incredible generosity.
Money is never what’s important in life, but sometimes you can use it to secure the things that really are important.

Move to Montana where there is a creek in every yard and the skiing is better.

At one point last summer, all three hills surrounding my house were on fire at the same time and everyone parked on the street and watched. Montana is great.

Can we start a campaign to move people who don’t actually want to live in the desert out of the desert?

I’m moving to northern New Mexico in June. I’m still trying to figure out if it is considered the desert or not.

So you freeze to death in the winter and burn to death in the summer, what’s not to like?

Seems like very high and dry desert-forest to me.

Seems about right. Here’s the view from the “city” park. Elevation is 6,400 ft.
PS - I have no idea what the hell I am doing leaving a metro area of 2.4 million people to go to a small town in the middle of nowhere with only a vague idea of what I’ll be doing there.

You should get a new mountain bike!

That will definitely happen. I’m budgeting around $2k.

Also I’m starting the feel the need for a mountain time zone Oppo meet... maybe we could all head somewhere in the middle like Denver?

I found a used stump jumper for my son for 1500, it could be hard to find a nice dual suspension for 2k, but possible.

Denver is still 1000 miles from where I am, I’d rather go to Seattle or Portland. There are a lot of Denver Oppos tho.

Most of it is definitely high desert.

Yeah. The obvious problem with the mountain states is everything is far from everything. I have no idea where a good location for people spread across NM, AZ, CO, MT, UT and ID would be to meet.

I clearly have no idea what I’m doing. The next year is going to be interesting.
