So far I’ve found the Federal Couragia AT 195/80/R15:
Which seems to be about it. It’s about the maximum height a stock Saab 96 will take, and it’s already too wide for full-lock steering, but there doesn’t appear to be anything narrower (all terrain or mud terrain) for 15" wheels.
It’s also too wide for the Saab’s super skinny stock 4" wide steel rims. It should just fits on the wider Sonnet rims I have though, so 195 is the widest I can hope to go without making some custom wheels.
I know even just a few years ago there were other 195 R15 AT tires available (because I’ve seen them used on VW buses) but don’t know whether they’re available anywhere anymore.
IF not... anybody have experience with Federal tires? They seem pretty cheap... but I guess that’s not necessarily a bad thing. I don’t expect the Baja Saab will be taken out very often and it’s not like it will actually be raced.

What is the original size on that car?

Original tires were 5.60x15 bias ply, with 155/80/r15 being the radial alternate. With Sonett wheels 165/80/R15 was the stock size with 185 being the widest without rubbing (the sonett wheels are wider and have about 1/4" more backspacing).
I have heard SAAB used 205 width tires on their Baja cars (which used Sonett wheels), but it’s doubtful they had to contend with doing any full-lock turns, so probably weren’t very concerned about rubbing. I think that’d be too wide though for anything that touches pavement, because the steering would be ungodly heavy at low speeds.

155/80-15
The BFG Radial TA and Vredestein Sprint Classic are both available in that size

Those are not all-terrain tires. I already have 155/80/R15 tires on the wagon. I need all-terrain tires for my project car.
The problem is finding all terrain tires that are narrow. Almost everything is 215 and up.

eh, they’re probably better than any bias-ply tires that were around when the car was new
And the Radial TA does kinda look like an A/T tire tho :p
I found some rally car tires in the size
175/70-15
if that would work

Gravel rally tire work? Check specialstage- Saabs are usually pretty well represented at vintage events.

I have some federal all seasons on my e30 basketweaves since finding 14" tires is tough. They are cheap, not like wheel spin in the rain but dangerous in snow cheap. I have maybe 5k miles on them though so I can’t speak long term how they hold up.

An additional option would be a non studded winter tire like this:

Nice site links for comparing different tire sizes:
https://tiresize.com/calculator/
and a couple of sites for tires of odd parentage:
list of 15" sizes: (how narrow do you want to go?)
15" Truck tire/offroad Options (some of these will fit you 4" rims)
a bunch of other sizes up to 195" width
We will need pics, when and if...

Yeah I’ve been using tiresize to compare different tires. I think 185/80/R15 would be the best fit, but there’s nothing I can find (in the U.S.) with an all terrain tread in that size. I’ll probably end up going with the Federal Couragia 195 tires because they’re available and cheap.
Looked at 7.00x15 tires, but it looks like the diameter would be too large (27" outside diameter pretty much takes up all available space).

The Federals are the only ones I see in that range. I found some smaller diameter options that look pretty aggressive, but they aren’t ATs specifically:(185/65/R15)
