Being a data geek I enjoy the massive amount of data our government makes available. I was poking around in the commerce department’s !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! data today and noticed they have a wealth of motor vehicle data up there.
So I made a graph that ended up being very startling...
Trucks man... trucks everywhere.

What defines a truck?
Do Ridgelines count? Expeditions? HR-C?

If I’m not wrong I think any SUV or Crossover regardless of whether it’s Body on Frame or not.

this, according to our stupid regulations.

Considering the HHR and PT Cruiser counted as light trucks I’m reluctant to read too much into those results

Trucks get away without many regulations because they are “work vehicles” and we will be dammed if we make business even a little inconvinient, but now individuals can buy wasteful, dangerous, large vehicles with little reprecussion.

But that hair can be split so many ways.
Where does ‘truck’ start on the Impreza-Crosstrek-Outback-Forester-Ascent line?

You will be assimilated.

Yeah, it’s based on the government definition of “light truck” which is CUV -> f350.

How about?

Imma guess Crosstrek.

MotorTrend did give the Evoq truck of the year a while back.

Especially when the language is nice and vague.
“any motor vehicle having a gross vehicle weight rating (curb weight plus payload) of no more than 8,500 pounds (3,855.5 kg) which is “(1) Designed primarily for purposes of transportation of property or is a derivation of such a vehicle, or (2) Designed primarily for transportation of persons and has a capacity of more than 12 persons, or (3) Available with special features enabling off-street or off-highway operation and use.”
So what determines if it’s primary purpose is transporting property? Cargo area? Pixies?

http://www.macrotrends.net/1369/crude-oil-price-history-chart
While oil prices are currently ticking up due to unrest in the Middle East, shale fracking has likely made the US indicator (WTI) stay low at a fundamentals level for the foreseeable future. If people want jacked-up trucky things, there’s no economic pressure preventing them from buying them.

Also, this was classified as a truck as well, IIRC.

and so it goes that the slope of this truck craze is very similar to the one in the 90's.

If it’s of any interest, Australia breaks their data up a bit differently. And one of the things we know as a result is that medium pickups (think Hilux, Ranger and their ilk) account for roughly 16% of total sales.
If the US is anything like Oz...even if you took out the CUVs and light/medium SUVs, you’d still have a trend...

If you can, try and separate the data even further into crossovers, trucks, SUVs, and cars.
It’ll definitely be /r/dataisbeautiful bait.

Id need to find a wide dataset for that. I could do it from individual manufacturer data... Wonder where websites get that.
