Have you ever driven a 4-cylinder manual Ranger? We have one at work. It’s... not fun.

Couldn’t pay me to drive it. Full size or no size.

Welp. I was just curious because I’ve always been slightly interested in manual Rangers.

These are good first vehicles, but they made TONS of them, they are not valuable or rare in any way.

The Vulcan V6? You mean the engine with all of the power of a 4 cylinder and the fuel economy of a V8.

Had a 94 in that configuration. Not a quick vehicle by any measure. Better on gas than the v8 I came from though

the 4cyl really are lacking in power once they get some miles on them.

It will be slow, but it will be a great first vehicle. I drove a 3.0 for 18 years. It only let me down a couple of times and both of those were just worn out distributors. I put 269k miles on that truck!

I would see if you can find one to test drive before getting too into looking. The clutch can be stiff and the shifter is kind of wonky to operate. The 4 cylinder is dog slow even with the manual. And that’s before you put anything in the bed. It’s also a pretty gruff sounding thing. Any of the various V6 motors the Ranger had help quite a bit, though the transmission feels about the same. IMO they aren’t really the ideal for a first manual car. They may be a bit out of your price range, but the manual Frontiers are much better vehicles to drive. As for that particular Ranger... it’s looks clean but an XL really is super basic. I understand the appeal of a stripper truck like that but I’d pay $4k tops.

Never again. I had a Mazda B3000 Dual Sport, and I traded it in for my first 06 GTO which was an auto. It is sad when an auto V8 gets significantly better fuel economy than a V6.

When my dad had his, he averaged something in the 20s combined.

That thing was good on gas. His was a 5 speed manual, I should add.

The autos aren’t good on gas. It is bad when you brag that you V8 got better gas than an small truck. They should have used the Yamaha V8 or 3.0 instead of the Vulcan.

I guess 5k is a good price, I have a 175,000 Ranger with the 3.0 that’s an overall solid truck. I paid $1200 for it. It had 159,000 miles on it.
