Toby hopes you Oppos have a good day. The Sunchaser is supposed to come home today, and the guy with the stinky CR-V is not responding to messages. Alas, its stench may have found a different home.
So maybe we can make this an Oppo project for those who want to play. My budget is about $6000, but I would stretch for something impressive. However, I would like to save money if I can, as surplus $$ will go into the Cressida.
The car is for my 17 year old son, who wrecked my dad’s Sport Trac only a few weeks after getting his license. We are past the part where he eats crow for his mistake, and we are turning our attention to the future. This car purchase must be approved by his mother, who will be the toughest critic. Here are the criteria:
1. No cool old cars. He certainly is not going to be rewarded for this mistake, and he knows he has set back the T Bird restoration. Mom will not approve anything without airbags.
2. Reliability and safety are key considerations. Fun factor and looking cool are low on the priority list. See why the stinky CR-V had appeal?
3. I would prefer to look in Fresno, but I would do Modesto and Bakersfield possibly. I have friends in LA and SF, and even Sacramento or San Diego, if you find something you think is truly remarkable.
Have some time to waste? Help my son find a car!

I owned a 2nd gen legend. They are gloriously good cars, but fun is one thing they are not. They’d be a great car for a kid now. We’ve also had 4 miatas over the years. They are gloriously fun, but 140hp really limits how much trouble one can get into with one. They are also stunningly strong cars to crash in.

I see so much for under 5k that I would love to have. But, if it were my kid (only about 4 years away from learner’s permit age), I’d want them to own something that would be relatively cheap to run and fixable when things break. Plus, I love older S10's. This one isn’t old enough for my taste, though.

Just wanted to toss out there that if there’s a vehicle you are interested in that’s located in/around Sacramento, I’d be happy to do a preliminary checkout for you if I’m in town.
As for suggestions, here’s a few I found on the local Sac craigslist.
2006 Hyundai Azera with 91k miles .
2000 Toyota Avalon with 138k miles .
2003 Honda Civic LX with 97k miles .
2007 Mazda 6 with 120k miles .
All are relatively modern and safe, clean titles, and reasonable miles. Not abysmal to drive, but not something that he would necessarily get in a lot of trouble with.

As repetitive as I sound when people post these - if you want something reliable (mine has gone 50k miles with no major issues at all), no frills, cheap, good on gas and new enough to be relatively safe, why not an Accent sedan or hatch like mine (possibly with a stick to help keep him focused on the road)?
https://modesto.craigslist.org/cto/d/2009-hyundai-accent/6551170530.html
https://bakersfield.craigslist.org/cto/d/2010-hyundai-accent-coupe/6513895918.html
Just noticed that somehow the second one is missing it’s drivers door handle though, which is really weird as they are not flimsy...

Forgive me for saying this, as I don’t know your son. I’m just going on my memories of being a teen with raging hormones and poor judgement at 17. Think twice about any kind of van or wagon with a back that can fit people in a prone position. A 17 years old can get into plenty of trouble with such a car, even when parked (especially when parked).

How will the wife and your insurance feel about a salvage title? If the issue was something like a theft recovery as opposed to major accident this could be a deal.

I think the beige wagon or a used high mile Honda Element are both good options. The Honda is safe, reliable, easily cleaned (college years), slow and quirky cool.

Just because it’s a safe car doesn’t mean it can’t be a good or interesting car- I’d look at a early 2000s Infiniti or Lexus. Nice cars that will prompt some pride of ownership, but safe and secure for your son.
Or just buy a damn Sienna and call it done.
