something rarely seen - a Holden Zafira with a working Z22SE motor

Those were reasonably successful in Germany in the early to mid naughts.

but how many had the 2.2? (which was the only engine sold here)

Probably approx none. I’ve never heard of a 2.2 Zafira, they were usually diesels or the smaller petrols. The newer models hardly sell at all because of the changeover to those crossover things.

Probably not that many I guess. Is it the 2.2 petrol engine with around 150hp?
![]() 04/02/2018 at 05:34 |

yes, 145hp if you want to be pedantic.

That 2.2 was the base engine of the Opel/Vauxhall Omega and available in the Vectra, Zafira and Sintra if I’m not mistaken.

The 2.2 was fine, as long as you had the oil jets for the timing chain checked and fixed (sure there was a recall on it here in the UK), knew a few people who had that engine in Astra’s, Vectra’s and Zafira’s, unlike the 1.8 which could come from the factory with visible blue smoke on start up and hard acceleration. I had 2 cars with the 1.8, a Mk 4 Astra SRi that never gave a wiff of smoke or used a drop between oil changes and a MK5 Astra Elite, that burned through oil at an alarming rate (with only 30k on the clock!).

i’ve seen that many 2.2 motors crap themselves.

Vectra we had with a C22SEL motor (not sure what the difference was) but we never had the Sintra.

Probably due to blocked oil jets then for the timing chain, from what I heard it wasn’t pretty when the chain let go!!
![]() 04/02/2018 at 06:18 |

how often did people there check the jets?
as i don’t think anyone out here ever did

I googled the differences and apparently the C22SEL has a timing belt and the Z22SE a timing chain. Maybe that’s complete bogus though.
You can thank GM for never offering the Sintra in Straya. It was a rebadged Chevrolet Venture/Olds Silhouette/Pontiac Transport minivan with minor tweaks for the Euro market and most likely a quick answer to the Ford Galaxy. The Galaxy was co developed with VAG which sold the minivans as the VW Sharan and Seat Alhambra.

yep you’re right. Zafira were chain and Vectra belt driven

Not a great car but for a few years were sold at half price new when the Zafira Tourer came out.
Colleague needed a car quickly and wanted new after some really bad experiences with used vehicles her ex-husband had bought over the years.
She was worried as she had two children (one with a medical condition that required a not so small amount medical machinery be carried and a dog.
She was worried she’d not be able to afford a new MPV of £16,000+ then I found her a new Zafira for £9,495.
As I say, not a great car, but does it’s job and was a great price when that money couldn’t get you a Toyota Aygo at the time.

Did your Astras have 5 or 6 speed manuals? What rpm did the 1.8 have at around 100 mph? I strongly consider an Astra GTC as a first car.

It was a recall for new jets I think, and then was fine unless oil and filter changes were skipped!

I think they were both 5 speed, rpm at 100mph would have been a lot, I don’t think I ever took the crappy Mk 5 one up to that speed tbh!
They don’t use the engine anymore now, I think the GTC only comes with the turbo petrol engines and dirty diesels.
