I’ll wait. Oh and if the link isn’t working.... He’s trying to sell his automatic E46 M3 for... $85,000 USD. Which is a deal because it has over $120,000 put into it. Including an upgraded turbo (he doesn’t mention the last turbo crapping out but I think we can make an educated guess).

I think the car is pretty great, actually. Just... Uh. Not almost six figures great. I’ve got $20k into my build and I’d be lucky to get a piggy bank full of pennies and a dairy queen coupon book.

Come on bro. Either build it because you love it and will hold onto it forever, or if you absolutely have to try to make back your money, part it out. There’s a reason most performance oriented builds get parted out.

This car has been on Seattle CL for at least a year.

I hate everything about this car, the ad, etc., and I usually love E46 M3s.

Unsurprising.

Imagine how much it could have made as a $60/day turo rental. Assuming everything works reliably and no one crashes (big if) that price would have it rented out literally every day around here. So $21,000 in a year, minus any turo fees, plus any mileage fees, so let’s say 20k. Not t bad

I try not to judge, but I’m almost positive I wouldn’t enjoy being anywhere near the owner.

You had an E46 M3 not too long ago, right?

Best place to advertise a 14 year old 85K SMG M3 is on CL.

I’d looooove to see receipts substantiating that “investment”.

Can I ask for career advice from a lawyer who’s not a bitter ass? =)

I went to a career panel at school, and it was on sole practitioners. Holy shit it was grim. The takeaway:

“You won’t really be a lawyer for 7-10 years, and until then you don’t know jack shit. And if you want to start your own practice: don’t. You’ll fail and crash and burn. Oh and if you want to go work for a firm we don’t hire anyone unless they have experience, but did we mention you don’t know shit for 7-10 years.”

I need some positive advice, if it exists. This just sounds like automotive all over again, except it only took me five years of working for assholes who told me I didn’t know jack and wouldn’t pay me.

ImmoralMinority was much more positive and his first suggestion for me was to start my own firm and do automotive type law.

Thanks.

Magazine featured... Street proven!

I feel like the guys that think their car is famous because Sport Compact Car put it in their reader rides section, are the same guys who say their cars are rare because “it’s 1 of 42 with orange ext/baby blue int and the lukewarm weather package”

I do know a sound system shop in Bellevue that specializes in high-end builds. When asked, he said his prices start in the 5 figures range.

Maybe the guy dropped all his cash on his subs

The only bigger crack pipe would be to spend $130k on an SMG M3.

Like this idiot claims he did.

There’s enough here that he could definitely get more than the usual going rate for a clean one. But... That’s like what? 10-20k depending on mileage? I’m thinking MAYBE on a good day he’ll get 1/3 asking price, unless these do an e30 appreciation trick

I did, for over 4 years, which is pretty long for me. Sold it in 2016. I really loved that car and was glad it went to a good home with someone who was as excited about it as I was, which is an objectively weird thing to think about a machine but it’s true.

If you have any questions about them from the owner-of-a-used one perspective I’m happy to try to answer them.

What you said is so true. I’ve sold real estate, appraised real estate, and managed real estate appraisers (in another life). It’s the same thing - in almost every market, if you put a $100K mountain lake pool in the backyard of a $45oK house, you do not get a $550K house. You get maybe $475, and in some neighborhoods you damage your marketability because people with small children view a pool as a hazard. You will never get every dime back for improving something. We’re about to spend money renovating the kitchen in our tiny apartment, and $15K (I’ll do the painting and finishing) will barely move the value meter.

Yes, if you can find one. Just kidding! I actually like my job. There’s some truth underlying the panel’s advice but the fearmongering seems a bit unnecessary. It’s true that going to law school teaches you surprisingly little about how to actually practice law and that striking out on your own is hard. However, if there’s an industry you’re already familiar with and an area of law relevant to that industry that you’re interested in practicing, you’re way ahead of the game, especially if you have a bit of a network that might refer legal work to you if and when it comes up. I don’t think starting your own shop is any harder in law than it is in any business, or at least any regulated industry—there are ethical and insurance and financial rules to pay attention to and follow, but that’s true of lots of industries.

It takes a lot of research, if not experience, to learn an area of law well and a lot of practice to get good (and efficient) at many types of legal work, but all you can really do about that is start doing it, and make sure to choose continuing education courses and use bar association resources that will actually help you develop your knowledge and skills. One way I’ve seen sole practitioners successfully get off the ground is to charge flat fees (rather than hourly) for projects, recognizing that they may have to do a lot of background research to do a good job that it isn’t really fair to charge the client for. Frankly, firms end up writing off a lot of new associates’ time for the same reason. But a flat fee assuages a lot of worry about hiring a lawyer you know to be relatively new to the job, and people just like doing business that way—it’s nice to know going in that your simple contract or will or articles of incorporation or whatever will cost $250 or $500 or $1000 all in.

When friends and family learn that you’re a lawyer, they will start coming to you for legal advice. If it’s straightforward enough or in your wheelhouse, do the work! But don’t do it for free—tell them that engaging you properly and paying you for your work, even at a discounted rate, formalizes the relationship and provides legal protections to both of you. Hit me up at rpm dot handshake at the gmail if you have more questions and I’ll do my best, time permitting of course.

Easy way to get around all that expense is to never add it all up. My turbo setup was cheap until I did the math and it was $3198.70. (Still cheap but not in the way that you think of “budget” turbos)

I’d also like to see those receipts :)

Too many cars with $xxxxx “invested” involve the owner doing work himself and billing it at the work of a legit pro.

The highest end electronic shop I have dealt with is Benchmark, who isn’t nearly in the five figure range.

As someone contemplating a kitchen remodel for his tiny condo, your $15k with some DIY work worries me... Time to start saving up or learning how to frame cabinets.

Appliances were all replaced by landlord before we bought it - they’re fine. Floor is hardwood - might sand off the topcoat and reseal. Cabinets are junk, but we can order something nicer that will mount right in place. And I am about to order the new ceiling fixture - same size (1' x 4') but an LCD instead of the dying fluorescent. So it’s a light makeover.
