I was eating lunch just a little while ago and noticed two guys “securing” a load to a trailer outside the fast food joint I was at. Whatever they had done previously must not have been good enough as they pulled in and proceeded to do this. I was wondering what was going on as the younger guy rolled the windows down and proceeded to toss a strap through the window. I just couldn’t believe what I was seeing. I thought anyone who had a trailer that was as well used as this one must have some idea of what they were doing, but neither the young guy or the older one (his dad I’m guessing) could come up with anything better than this wonderful job of securing this POS Hyundai to the trailer. I left right after them and was able to document their ‘work’ as shown.

I usually believe in “if it’s stupid and it works, then it ain’t stupid”. But man this is just stupid lol. Even if they used some intelligence and didn’t wrap one around a frigging mirror, i would think they have exceeded the weight limits of those straps. My guess is harbor freight “heavy duty” straps. Haven’t they ever see a tow truck?? Just strap the wheels or frame or something. I’ve never towed anything and probably could have at least made it safe.

Well abviously you can’t just use the suspension components or the wheels that wouldn’t make any sense.

So this is better than whatever they were doing before?

Before this they probably just had it sitting on the trailer with the parking brake on.

I’m certainly no rigger or hauler myself, but I’ve seen enough to know that this isn’t how to do it. There’s basically nothing except the flimsy roof rack (what’s it secured with? A couple 6mm bolts?) from allowing the SUV to roll forward, and I guess the front A-pillar and the single through-the-window strap from going backwards. The strap over the hood does absolutely nothing unless a space ship tries to levitate the Hyundai into the air. There is also nothing to stop side-to-side slippage.
I just hope these jackasses don’t kill someone before they get their load home.

I hope there are no corners where they’re going.

If you saw them struggling with this. Why didn’t you help. You could have at least offered some advice.

I assume they are following the old adage, “if you don’t know how to tie a knot, tie a lot.”

By the time they arrived:

In my experience, people that stupid often respond poorly to offers of help, I wouldn’t have said anything either. Hell, even people who don’t seem stupid respond poorly to offers of help.

Since the straps are worth more than the Hyundai, maybe they are using the car to hold the straps down. That makes more sense.

A borrowed trailer, maybe?

Four straps. Loop one through two spokes on each wheel, ratchet down in diagonal cross pattern until tight. Done.
