And why is it when you first encounter The Flood in the original Halo?

Honestly can’t think of a better moment than this currently.

Because it is.

That shit was damn near impossible on Legendary.

I always thought the original Mechwarrior 2 (1996) intro video was awesome and a huge ‘Oh Shit’ moment:
The ending...
Computer: “Warning ammunition level: CRITICAL..........weapon depleted”
It starts there....lol, and, of course, the eerily unanswered radio call at the end...

I remember playing Halo 1, running into the Flood, and then going “oh, it’s one of those.”
See: Starcraft Zerg
See: 40k Tyranid
See: Doom 1 shareware when you get into the teleporter at the end of Ep 1 and you wind up in a surprise room full of death nasties
See: Fast zombie movies where infection is caused by parasites
It was fun, though, although I hated using controller twin sticks for tiny thing hitting. Especially on legendary. Martin O’Donnell made it better.

The introduction had nothing on the Library on legendary.

I didn’t finish the game for two years because 10yo me was terrified of the Flood.

It just works.

I think what made the Flood particularly bad was that you know exactly where you are, you know how deep you are in the facility. You just spent probably a couple hours getting down there and now you need to backtrack that whole thing with that tidal wave of unstoppable horrors coming at you from every direction.

Resident Evil 2, the dogs.
You know what I’m talking about if you played it.

It was an interesting concept, but also felt slightly like lazy level design, but I didn’t complain when they did the upside down castle in Symphony of the Night, so I didn’t complain then.
Honestly on legendary they were nearly unstoppable (ran out of ammo pretty much all the time, forcing me to use that stupid green gun over and over) and I got tired of seeing a montage of Master Chief’s corpse falling to the ground.
Looking back, my very first “Oh Shit” moment in video games was when I was playing Wolfenstein 3D shareware and I got to the last boss. “GUTEN TAG!!” and a dude with huge chainguns shows up and I panicked and ran out of the room. I’ve been playing games too long, I think.

Much of the game has that lazy design where you end up backtracking a lot through a variation of an area you’ve already seen. It’s smart though, and I think it’s done well

My favorite part of this is that there are weapons that work against the flood, it’s just very shaken up compared to the covenant. The flood aren’t outrageously difficult but they’re very different to everything you’ve fought so far.
