A good day of spotting down at Austin-Bergstrom yesterday. Gotta get up early and fight the idiots on the road to make it down south while the light is still good. Added bonus: being able to see the pilots in the cockpit.
I’m also starting to experiment with different crops and motion blur shots, using a slower shutter and trying to catch the plane in focus with a blurred background. If you are inclined to do so, please try viewing these on

, where they look much better and you can actually navigate through a slide show.

Dat Pilatus doe!
You will never go wrong shoving a big turboprop in the nose of a small plane.
I also love the Cessna Caravan.

Love the colors on that Pilatus!
Also, what’s with that green rock trying to beat the air into submission?

i was playing on Google Earth and found these:

I’m very intrigued by that second photo. I have no idea what that is specifically. It’s obviously some sort of stealth aircraft, but what, I don’t know. Neat.

clearly this is the aliens landing area.
I was looking there because I had read the link below and it mentioned Lockheed’s base and I figured there might be some cool stuff to see there.

Airbus 350 Squirrel (actually, some oddly spelled French work I can’t spell correctly). The TXDOT hangar is right next to the observation spot, and I will often see the DPS helicopter taking off.
I’ve never seen this one, though. My guess is that it might have been in town to help with the bombing investigation. Sure is pretty, though. He took off right along the fence line in front of me, paralleling the runway as an airliner was landing. Made for a great photo pass.

How about this?

No, this is what an Airbus 350 looks like (seriously though why are there 2 Airbus 350's?):
Note that it has fixed wings - wings shouldn’t rotate.

Ooh, wait! Two more.
Sadly, I didn’t get to see him fly that day.

The engines on the ERJs look so adorable. As much as I love small-engined aircraft having their engines in the rear, I can’t get enough of seeing small planes having wing-mounted turbofans.
Oh and that American one is a fun challenge. MD-83?

Great, all the headaches of a helicopter, with none of the benefits... :)

Those are CF34s, which are based on the TF34, which drives the A-1o.
Close: MD-82 (N501AA).

I know autogyros have been around forever, but they just seem really sketchy. I’d be scared shitless being that exposed.

Airbus A400M Atlas, engines that rotate in different directions to the one next to it. Very interesting to watch start up.

Without VTOL capability, I’m not sure what the point of an autogyro is, really - other than just to be quirky.
I don’t really love helicopters - my dad’s old next door neighbor was a long time United Captain (and in fact has his name on the 727 at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago), and he always said he hated helicopters, thanks to his military days. If an engine fails, I’d rather be in a glider than a rock.. (and yeah that’s not exactly true, I know...)

This guy? We were just at the MoSI last summer. It’s changed a lot since I last went there 25 years ago. We went often on field trips in the early 70s. I love that place. I spent a lot of time looking at the 727, which is a relatively recent addition.

I know! Those engines are used on the CRJ family too. It’s just so cute to see them in wing pods like that. :3
Missed opportunity to name them “Adorabus”!
Ohhh and so close! I didn’t even know that there were 82s still flying in passenger service.

Yup! That’s him! The 727 has been there a while, IIRC United may have donated it, and they put his name on it when it first went into the museum.
Besides being a pioneer in aviation, he’s a great person, as well (as is Molly, his wife). The two of them have spent a LOT of their time giving back to the community, aviation in general, and their alma mater (SIU in Carbondale).
It’s been a while since he retired and they moved back to southern Illinois (and I think AZ now), but I’m pretty sure they’re both still around.

I’m really impressed by that top picture! The way the big blue one is balancing on the tail of the little white one underneath. Like those balancing toys we all had as kids.

I dare you to dress in all black with a bandanna covering your face and then add mirrored sunglasses while you sit outside of the fence taking pictures of commercial airliners.

There are places where the police are not at all tolerant of plane spotters, even though what we do is perfectly legal. I’ve never been hassled, though, even when I was sitting outside the fence at an Air Force base. The local cops pull through and we exchange a friendly wave. Of course, it helps to be white and neatly dressed.

Ah you’re good then even if you’re holding a Stinger launcher.

This is the fly-over before the start of the IndyCar Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. I was down on the grid when the plane came. No time to zoom or anything. I just pointed the camera straight up and hit the shutter. I like how it came out. Half the sky is washed out as the sun was just out of frame. The antenna is from one of the team’s pit set-up.

Looks like a KC-135. That’s a great shot. Photography is a funny thing. Sometimes, the shots we try so hard to assemble are disappointing, while the single shot taken in a moment can be the most rewarding. It’s why photography can be so amazing yet so frustrating at the same time.
