So, I’m supposed to come in on Friday at 7:30 - missing work at my current job - to ride along in one of the trucks and see if it’s the right fit for me. Now, I’m under the impression that it’s totally unpaid, so they shouldn’t have me do anything other than observe... which is still just strange. But there’s always the chance that I’m hired and they did a terrible job of making that clear.
In any case, they wouldn’t want me to do this if they weren’t interested, so that’s a good sign.

You know, when I first took the faculty position I have now, the department chair who was recruiting me had me for the standard give a talk interview. Then, she had me back again for more interviews. No big deal because I lived across town, but on the final call back, I flat out said make me an offer on paper before I drive over again.
I think sometimes prospective employers forget that you have other stuff to do for your current job until they hire you.

Thats... weird. I’m of the opinion that your time is valuable so you should be paid, but it’s not a huge deal if you’re cool with it.
What I wonder is why you need a ride along to see if it’s a fit? Hopefully it’s only a few hours.

it may be a test of willingness etc

Yep, but I’m still looking for something more permanent. My current new job has an incredibly high turnover rate, so they won’t mind if I quit this early. They hire about 10 people every single week, to give you an idea of how fast they lose employees.

Definitely. I also don’t think I’ll have this one much longer regardless; my girlfriend just (like within the last five minutes) got an email telling her she was terminated from the same job I have... for no reason other than they don’t need her anymore. Not performance related or anything.
So on top of everything, I’ll need the extra income. This should pay nearly twice as much, so I can cover for her for now.
