I hate you. Read the title, got excited for new roadkill, realized you meant on their dumb pay website, and now I am sad. Was very much looking forward to this first thing after work today. You are a bad person lol.

To be fair the episode IS free on the MTOD website. I don’t subscribe and I’m watching it right now. With lots of ads.

I stopped watching at around the mid 50's episodes or so... They do all the same cars over and over again, and it’s always either mindless destruction and fucking burnouts, or just putting a big engine in a boring muscle car.

I know it’s what it always was, but I just got sick of the million baits to buy their shit and the cars got less interesting to me, I dunno...

Ads every 2 minutes were unbearable, I finished the episode but... RIP Roadkill.

Don’t know if you follow Freiburger on the Book of Face, but he’s quite non-plused about the entire situation. Sounds like they’re contractually obligated to continue the show, but he completely agrees with the anger fans are having. It sucks that he and Finnegan are bearing the brunt of the rage. I had really hoped to see a Hoonigans/Roadkill crossover episode.

Honestly as much as I love Roadkill, RKG, and DED, I can’t get behind this. And don’t give me the “It’s only 4.99 a month” argument (not you Taco, we’re good). This show was built on the fan base, and via YT, and should have stayed there in the 1-month late format. I do honestly think this will cause MTOD to go the same route as /DRIVE network, and slowly die out. With minimal new content being produced.

Makes me think that Mike Musto decided to pursue House of Muscle on his own because he saw the writing on the wall.

Honestly I think MTOD will pull through thanks to the sheer amount of content they have and their live race coverage. Hell, MTOD is just $4 a year more than the subscription to watch V8 Supercars via their official sub service, but in addition you get things like Blancpain GT racing, IMSA, Pirelli World Challenge, 12 Hours Bathurst, 12 Hours Silverstone, etc. And that’s just their live race coverage.

Maybe, but they have pulled out of YT completely. So for better or worse, they cut ties with the single largest digital video network, and “free” access to new fans/viewers. From a business stand point, I simply don’t get the motivation. The old way of thinking, EG “We’re the only way to get it” is stupid. Keep the new stuff behind the pay to play paywall, that’s fine, but airing the free “older” new episodes 8 WEEKS later on MTOD only is just bad business. I don’t get why they needed to change from 1 month out on Youtube for the free stuff. To me there is no justification for it, other than MT/Ten/Discovery thinking they’re bigger than they are.

I’ll give you a for instance - my father in law. Old school gear head in his 60s; he likes Chevelles, Camaros, and NASCAR. I turned him onto Roadkill with the Nascarlo episode, and he was hooked. He mentioned that he recognized Freiburger from when he had editorials in Car Craft. I know for a fact he won’t watch on MTOD, simply because it will take too much time for him to figure out how. YouTube was already an app on his smart tv, MTOD is not. Granted this is just one guy, but I have to think there are plenty of other fans just like this.

That why is easy. Motor Trend has tons of partners and automotive companies that want to advertise with them. On YouTube they have no control over the ad content. On their own site they get to choose the advertisers (who pay them directly, and probably far greater sums than they could get on YouTube). They also have control over when and how often the ads run.

a) their pay website isn’t bad. I use it more than I do netflix.

b) these shows don’t get made for free and the youtube ocmmenters made it sound like every episode was fucking awful so why bother at this point? If YT is to be believed, they peaked at like episode 7. So to the general audience, there is nothing lost by them not posting there.

c) Fuck youtube and their greedy-ass unsustainable ad revenue splits that make shows like this difficult to make or find a home for while also fucking up content ID and more and in general making YT a terrible place to post content unless you film people hanging themselves and your subsequent apology.

Sidenote - I bet the dodge sponsorship is either ending or is more limited than it used to be.

Roadkill is losing some of its magic. Too many silly things, but the Chevy pickup rail project was kind of fun, but I wish they’d had time to tune it. Just going out and thrashing cars for the sake of thrashing them isn’t as much fun as, say, retrieving that old car carrier. Or Stubby Bob.

Haha I love their “ehh it works time to thrash the hell out of it on some dirt now” mantra. It is my favorite part about Roadkill that they never test anything and it always breaks. It just seems like they are genuinely are having fun which is exactly why it’s entertaining. I will agree that it is a bit more “produced” than it used to be and having an actual budget always tends to ruin things. Its still my favorite show either way but yeah nothing beats classic road kill.

Oh, I never miss it. I just don’t always finish the episode, more so lately. I subscribe to MTOD and it’s money well spent. I learn a lot watching those guys. My near term goal is to get my picture taken with Steve Dulcich. He’s my favorite of the entire lot.
