In a week, I will be in Italy for a 10 day vacation in a tour with my family.

Kinja'd!!!

I am having a hard time getting excited for the trip, and I feel bad about that. I have been going through kind of a meat grinder professionally, and am under a lot of stress. I think once I am on the trip I can let go and enjoy myself - I hope so

Lately, the things that make me feel best are Toby and the Sunchaser, and both will be left behind.

I have a lot of travel this week, including a seminar in Santa Barbara for auto repair shops, and one of the biggest motions of my career in Friday. If I win that motion, I will be riding high.

If your not enthused about the trip, don’t force it, just let it happen.

Use the opportunity to switch off and let your body and mind recharge.

Italy has great food and wine but look up where your going to be or go as some places close early, some open for a couple of hours here and there, some don’t open on certain days, etc...

Good luck friend! Bring me back many classic FIAT 500s! They’ll fit in your pockets, just scoop a few up and nobody will be the wiser >_> <_< >_>

I’ll just be excited for you then.

It’s understandable. It sounds like you have a fairly big week between you and the trip. Once that is behind you and you are in the country I’m sure it will get better.

Sticking to Rome or any specific plans?

Where are you visiting?

Some tips: Eat Gelato everyday. Twice if the opportunity arises.

Rome is great, history everywhere, but watch your wallet. Expert level pickpockets.

For most major things you can buy tours that get you in an hour before the crowds. Well worth it for the Vatican or seeing David in Florence. The same museum that houses David also has one of Marco Pollo’s bibles tucked away in a corner. It was kind of cool to see that.

There is a museum in Florence with one of Galileo’s fingers. Awesome and gross. Lots of cool old science stuff in there as well.

Venice is lovely. Spend an hour or two seeing the touristy stuff like the square and the church and then go find the back streets and walk around there. Way more interesting than all the shops and the mob.

If you make it to Milan then Monza is a short train ride north. The Royal park there is lovely. In the park lives the speedway. Climb the banking if you can sneak in.

Eat more gelato.

I’ll go instead if you want, I’ll take this week off too so I can go renew my passport....

Wait that isn’t very helpful....

Are you going to rent anything fun to drive over there?

Your mission is to take as many Fiat pics as possible so I can feel like I got to go.

You’ll be fine.

We went to Italy a month after my father died. I was not looking forward to it either. On Dec 28 I really had to make an effort to get up and go.

I think it was our best trip I ever.

For example... last night in Italy, finding a rural hotel in the middle of nowhere, very late - no reservation but they managed to find us a small room. Similar story with dinner. Family-run, great place, great people. While eating I started looking at some framed b/w pictures on the wall; something was unusual. Got up, went straight to one of them... those were images of the works Lancia Martini team on their way to the Monte (maybe for practice?). Courtyard of the place had been chock-full of 037s and service barges.

Next day we still had a fair way to go to reach the border and had to keep ahead of a snowstorm chasing us. Again, late at night, bought the last set of snowchains available for my car’s tyre size in a petrol station... fortunately they were not needed.

Crossing the border into France, a lime green blur races past us to be first at the last toll stop. It was a Miura.

I could go on and on and on. Italy is a magical place. Whatever is worrying you right now or will worry you later, I am certain you wil fondly remember your time there for many years to come.
