The other day I had someone not let me merge in, but they had a really good reason...I didn’t let them use the merge lane to cut infront of the semi two cars ahead of me. Because I was merging into traffic. That was all going the same speed.

In these situations either floor it immediately and cut in and give the “sorry wave” (The ask forgiveness vs. ask permission thing), or slow down, wait and find the gap.

I have found that attempting it at normal speeds is asking for an accident due to assholes like these.

I can’t wait to drive around in my Dodge M37, people can try what they like, they won’t be winning! Oh a scratch? I can just touch it up with spray paint. I got a couple spray cans with the bulk paint we are spraying it with. It should be interesting to see what the typical BMW suv drivers do.

I’ve had similar moments where it ends up being a “I’m ignoring the yield, screw you” from the other car and I’m forced to either brake hard or swerve hard just to dodge them.

It is, without fail, one of these three types of vehicles:
- Fully loaded luxobarge SUV/crossover.
- Pickup trucks who think size > intelligence.
- Minivan drivers with a 2:1 ratio or higher of screaming kids to adults.

Once, I saw both a black Explorer Sport and a black Taurus SHO sitting in an area cop cars usually sit. Probably a couple arguing about who should use the Kroger gas points or something, but that spooked me.

I hate right-lane-ends-merge-left lane drops. They reward left-lane campers, who always seem to merge too early and drive too slowly. I wish they were all left-lane-ends-merge-right, which would help reinforce the need to stay out of the passing lane.

Yeah, you have to be motivated. If you have the gap, take it and move on, otherwise you had your chance and you’ll have to figure it out. I won’t gun it if I’m in the continuing lane, but you better step on it if you’re trying to merge or else you just have to wait and figure it out. If I have to choose between hitting the brakes or the gas, I’m hitting the gas 90% of the time. Michigan driving has lead me to such behavior. So I can see both sides of this particular situation. But if you have the gap, don’t dwell, take it and go.

Fun fact, my friend has an M37 on his ranch and he straightens old nails on the front fender like a workbench. The old fenders are pretty thick steel, if you see an old army M37 with a fucked up fender it must have had something serious happen to it!

I have 2 policies for merging

1. If I can tell you are just trying to intentionally jump the line, you aren’t getting in.

2. In you signal and didn’t break rule one, Im happy to let you in.

Nah. I take umbrage with people that use the zipper as an excuse. We all see you coming from the outside Lane with a big speed and hoping to take advantage of people. There is the zipper (which is fine) and obviously hoping to cut in line and the difference is pretty obvious.

This is exactly what I’ve noticed, too. For some reason the police version lacks roof rails and it’s the only way to tell them apart at a glance.

I must admit that I totally agree with this... But it also means that if you’re approaching a big group of people trying to turn and go left, you’ll get that one asshole that waited in line with the people turning that will try to deny you entry to the right lane after the intersection...

You can’t pack the merge lane if everyone gets out of it early. In which case, how do you ever end up in a situation where zipper works (except onramps)?

Around here, as long as it’s not dropping to one lane, I’d always let them go because they’re always aiming to get into the left lane to camp. I outrun everyone that isn’t in the HOV lane on the freeways in heavy traffic around here by simply yielding to anyone merging in because they’re invariably preparing to move into the next lane...

Whether the right or the left lane is the one to end, heavy traffic will always make the merging awkward for somebody . And yeah you’re going to encounter people who defend what they perceive to be their right-of-way. What we really need is to have more states mandate (and enforce) zipper merging.

I really only use this method when towing as it seems NO ONE can let a vehicle with a trailer merge, no matter how polite they are being.
