Taken while dropping the bike off at the shop to get the fork looked at. It started developing a popping sound at the end of yesterday’s ride. Its only 2 months old...Ugh. Also featured: extreme amounds of tree pollen on the car. It only took a couple hours to accumulate all that.

My mpg takes a massive hit with bikes on...totally worth it

Pretty much the same reason I got my Subaru, to haul mountain bikes! Which bike is that?

Tree pollen: coating everything in a new shade of yellow since the dawn of time.

Honzo with cheap rockshox? It sucks that they put a cheap fork on that bike.

I mean yeah it’s a recon but its got the MoCo damper so it’s not too bad. Fork was planned to be the first upgrade anyway, but not this soon...

Kona Honzo. I love this thing so much.

Hasn’t hit around me yet. I’m not looking forward to dirty, sticky cars a day after washing...

I’ve never had any issues with fox or rockshox forks but they are typically the higher end models. I really like the new fox 34 I have on my bike. You can run 29 or 27.5+ on that fork.

Yeah I had my eyes set on a Fox 34 about a year or so down the road. My buddy has a 34 Rythym on his chameleon that’s so plush and light so I can’t even imagine how good a float or factory will feel.

The bike looks absolutely massive at that angle (or the car tiny).
In the PNW, what makes a Subaru a Subaru is either a dozen bumper stickers, a dog in the car, or a ski/bike rack that never ever contains skis or a bike.

The bike is pretty big and the car is fairly small, but the angle really exaggerates it haha

What hitch are you using?
![]() 03/19/2018 at 00:57 |

It’s the EcoHitch hidden/invisi 1-1/4"receiver. The receiver is just inside where the rear foglight cover was. It was kind of a bitch to install as I had to drop the exhausts and pull off the bumper cover/tailights/impact bar. But it was well worth it.

That’s the one I’ve been looking to get! Any issues besides the original install?

During the install you will have to do some trimming (preferably with a dremel...I used snips of some kind and its a total hack job) of the plastic on the underside of the bumper cover and also the clips that held the rear foglight cover in place.
The main issue with it is that its difficult to reach back through the foglight hole or under the bumper cover to put the pin in the receiver. I’ll try to get a picture later so you can see how recessed the receiver is into the bumper. Sliding the pin in is mostly done by feel and I’ve definitely crushed a finger before trying toe get the holes lined up. You can get used to it but anything larger than a standard hitch pin is gonna be a huge pain. I bought
this extender
because my bike rack has a threaded pin that would be virtually impossible to ratchet in through the foglight hole, so the extender is permanently attached to the bike rack, and then I just use a standard pin between the extender and the hitch.
Last nitpick: I think I hear creaking between the hitch and the frame rails rarely, but that could be anything honestly, it is a Subaru after all...

Is it creaking without a load? It’s pretty common to hear noise from the receiver & hitch under load because the hitch is usually moving around inside the receiver. It was bad on my wife’s Explorer because the receiver was a little too large for the hitch . The only way to fix it is with an anti-rattle clamp or pin.

I’m looking to do exactly what you are doing. I’d rather not have to use a roof mounted rack. The OEM load bars aren’t as robust as I’d like. If I’m going to spend more money on better bars, I might as well get a hitch rack instead.
