So, it looks like I can actually do some work on the truck this spring and drive it this summer. Thank god for bonuses. Can Oppo opine on the work planned and what, in their opinion the cost maybe as well as anything I missed and should do?

Keep in mind, I have no garage, and really only a socket set for tools. I have no storage space for any additional tools. Also, the truck doesn’t live at my townhouse.

I think you could do all of that (except for the exhaust) yourself in 1 weekend. You should buy a grease gun to add to your tool collection.

Perhaps yeah. Storage of tools is an issue, I basically live in a condo. Access to the truck is also an issue since it is at my parents

Notes:

If you’re already doing the plugs you should really replace the cap and rotor and get new plug wires. In my experience, these components go bad far more often than the plugs themselves.

If you’re comfortable doing it then you should flush the brake fluid, PS fluid, and coolant. Sounds intimidating but all easy to learn.

Accessory belt - use a belt tension gauge, it’s easy to leave these too loose.

Crankcase breather and PCV valve - no reason to change these if they are working, unless they are real cheap.

Diff fluid and trans filter/flush - if you can handle it. These usually don’t have drain plugs so can get a bit messy, but neither is particularly difficult. Most cars have never had either done.

Timing check - you mean the ignition timing, right? Throw a bit of extra advance on the distributor, usually good for a few hp.

Battery cables - great idea. Usually the crustiest wire is the one to the starter, but it’s good to do all of them. I recommend making them yourself with 4ga wire and copper lugs. If you solder these it really holds off the corrosion.

Brake check - never hurts to look but I don’t like to mess around with drums unless there’s a problem or I’m planning to change them.

The diff fluid change you can do yourself, might need a flexible funnel or hand pump depending on the space under there but both items are cheap and don’t take up much space. You can inspect the brakes yourself, pulling a drum off isn t usually hard and inspecting brake lines is self explanatory

Store the tools in a toolbox in the truck at your parents.

Good advice except PCV valves are cheap, easy to change, and can kill your vehicle if they go bad.

Any of your friends have a garage they would let you use for a weekend? Or is it not road worthy enough in it’s current state?

Just hate for you to waste the money on the realitively simple jobs by paying a shop.

Btw, I had an exhaust put on my 51 a couple years ago (from headers back). It came to about $500. That’s with no brand name mufflers (flowmaster, borla, etc). Just to give you an idea what it should cost.
