A small aluminium thing with a 1.4l diesel triple. You don’t see them every day. Actually, you’ve probably never seen one. Me, I see them now and again.
Also gives us a chance to admire the spectacularly optimistic 220 kmh speedo in a K12 Nissan Micra.

I’ve seen one!

I don’t understand why they don’t range the speedo more appropriately so that you can more easily judge your speed in the real world range.

This. There is no way in hell a Micra is hitting above 130km/h

Downhill. With a tailwind.

There are certain clues that that’s an A2 of a French persuasion.

St. Martin, actually.

Still French, technically! It’s also in the EU unlike some other overseas territories. Doesn’t explain why the blue Panda seems to be from département 11 though.

My theories are that (a) Nissan want buyers to think that a Micra is much quicker than it is and (b) that they use the same speedo on several different models.

130 is highway cruising speed? The top speed of those things is between 154(65 hp) and 172 (89 hp) if my euro sources are correct. Maybe less if you find one of the rare slushboxes.

b

Indeed there’s no reason for a speedometer to go over 100mph

“Do you know how fast you were going?”
“Why no officer, I don’t.”
Plausible deniability FTW.

From what I understand when I went down the rabbit hole of French number plates after my St. Martin trip, the plates with the 971 departement number on the end date back to the time before St. Martin was administratively split off from Guadeloupe.
(From farther out the 9 and 7 probably look like a 1)

Micras are quite commonly automatics because of the age group who generally buy them - as this one is, it’s my mother’s.
There’s no way it’s going 154 kmh unless you drop it off something really high. It’ll do 110 or so comfortably on level ground - it has very high gearing and cruises quietly enough - but going beyond that takes patience and lots of revs in third gear.

Good point. 145 kmh top for the 80hp automatic is what I found. Comfortable at 110 sounds about right I guess.

Yes, it does look like an odd 11. I thought it was some artefact of the picture.
It seems that St Martin is now 978 and is one of an odd group called the
collectivités d’outre-mer
which includes the French Antarctic territory.

Very, very fond memories of that car. I was loaned one (1.4 petrol, if memory serves) for a couple of days. Really entertaining to drive. For some reason I particularly remember the very firm front seats (?) - not at all uncomforable.
It felt extremely special. Would love to have one some day.

I recall these being somewhat common when I lived in London in 2004. I also remember nearly all of them being that generic Audi silver color.
