I'm afraid that Ford's going to do something stupid with the F-150 name

Not saying that they will . But I wouldn’t put it past them...

You’ve seen automakers playing name games before. Chevy couldn’t figure out what kind of car a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! is supposed to be. Mitsubishi has all but abandoned the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ’s heritage. And Chrysler changes their company name more often than some people change their socks...

Two months ago, Ford threatened to turn the next !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! into a crossover SUV and has yet to put our minds at ease over such !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

Now, a recent report from Morgan Stanley had this to say about Ford and the F-150 brand:

!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Now this certainly isn’t an indication that Ford’s actually going to do something weird with the F-150 name (are we not using the broader term “F-series” anymore?). No one’s saying that “F-150” will start being applied to non-trucks. Nor is it a sign that F-150 will become its own spinoff brand a la Ram.

But it gives me an uneasy feeling, you know? Like Ford’s going to take advantage of this in some ridiculous way, disregarding a well-established brand identity of what defines the F-150, and bastardizing the name to help sell other Ford cars or something like that.

Who knows.

Pull an Oldsmobile and just call everything “F-150"? F-150 Mustang, F-150 Fusion, etc.

Ford F-150, now, more than ever, the best-selling vehicle on the planet, more than 6.6 million sold per year.

F150 Crossover (Expedition)
F150 Jr. (Ranger)

The F250 and up will now be
F150 Super Duty (F250)
F150 Super Duper Duty (F350)
F150 Super Duper Duper Duty (F450)
etc

Not sure if this is a 5150 reference, or a reference to Ford building an “Atlas” concept truck when Nissan was already using the Atlas name.

There’s 0% chance that the F150 name goes away, or on anything besides pickups. Too much brand equity, and Ford learned their lesson already with the Taurus / 500 switch-a-roo.

They don’t need it for SUVs either - already have all of them covered.

I could see more special editions like the Raptor, however.

I hope you’re right.

They sure did some weird things with the Taurus name after bringing it back, though. Like slapping the name (+ “X”) on a crossover. Or putting the name on a full-size car instead of keeping it mid-size like everyone had gotten used to.
