Remember when I posted this place a little while back? “Uh, no. I don’t like your posts and do not wish to subscribe to your newslett—” Great. Here are some photos.
So anyway, it’s 5,000 square feet. The car bay side alone could hold every remaining running Tercel in the continental United States. The RV side is also bigly.
In addition, upstairs on one side is a studio/music room. Photos don’t do justice but it’s bigly.
On the other side we have mother-in-law thing going... Except it has more bedrooms and square feet than my house and garage combined.
You also get a view of the main house.
“Are you impressed with anything in particular?” At this point, I’m only reporting on the bigliness. It feels like it’s been a little while since I posted house stuff too.

I wonder how people would react if you built that garage thing in a standard neighborhood and just lived in the MIL. Would the neighbors bitch about property values?
Because that’s how I want to live

It would be a win-win for me. My wife gets two stories and I get a bunch of space for partially-running vehicles.

No joke, that’s actually what I might end up doing!

Disregard house, live over garage

Some design aspects aside, that’s my dream

I’d be happy just living in the garage.
I’d probably want slightly wider garage doors, so I can get round the car while it’s near the doors.

Could I just build something like this as a home? That’s my dream.

Living the dream!

Your detached garage is, in fact, a smaller version of my dream house.

We have some friends who recently bought a house maybe 1/2 the size of that house, and on the same property, the previous owner had recently built a garage about that size - 5 large, deep bays, some with high doors - just no “apartment” above it. I was talking to the guy and he’s like, “Yeah, we only have 2 cars, which we’ll just keep in the attached garage... I don’t even know what we’re going to do with it! Haha!”
It was so hard not to say, “OH MY GOD LET ME HAVE IT” or at least let me come over whenever I want to work on my car / boat. I mean, he probably would let me do that, but it’s just far enough away to be inconvenient, and he doesn’t have any tools in there, so I’d have to bring everything with me each time... yeah.
Oh yeah, also in the house, the previous owner was a builder, so he fitted the house with central compressed air. As in, there is an outlet in most rooms of the house where you can hook up a nail gun or something, all powered by the compressor in the basement. Of course, this includes the attached garage. I don’t know if he did the same in the detached 5-bay.

Wow.

Add a fucking car lift, motherfucker. Wrench on your cars in that bigly garage, get a bigly car lift, a bigly toolbox, and a bigly engine winch.
Seriously, that much room and you don’t think about wrenching?!

Millionaires largely don’t do their own wrenching.

I’ve been threatening something like this for years, myself. I just want a huge garage with a 2/2 living quarters above. It doesn’t even need to be this huge (although I’d love so much space).
I’ve seen a place kind of like this out in Black Diamond on a large SFH lot (that is, on the same property as an SFH, but a separate building that is basically a huge shop/garage with a living space above), a lot of ADUs like this on Bainbridge Island (dating back to when it was rural), and even one in Woodinville (which I believe was also in an area that was annexed by the city, much as the town of Winslow was annexed by the rural voters of BI to create the city of BI).

And people wonder why I look upon rich people in such contempt.

I think the toilet in the middle of the room is a bit of a questionable design choice. Most people like some level of privacy while toileting, but to each their own I guess.

I see a lot of freshly retired tradesmen building places like this in Fall City, or Snoqualmie. I say go for it. We can hold PNW tech days at your garage!

My current problem is my wife. I don’t think she’d want to live in a place like that. Women have weird priorities.
