Instagram is the worst thing to happen to car culture. Now all you need to be a car person is some plasti-dip, a mid-level trim 4cyl compact, 15 @ stickers from your “crew”, and some girl with a lip piercing that you’re banging behind her boyfriend’s back (he’s the one with the 2008 Civic Si with 189k miles that he owes money on). Call me a purist, but I feel like you should have more than a baseline knowledge of buy-here-pay-here lot darlings to be a car person. If that means that less people want to be car people, then good. You shouldn’t dilute the brand.

That said, donut’s up to speed videos are the best car videos out there.

This is a good take except for the last part.

My issue with Instagram is the lack of involvement. I like build threads. I like cohesiveness. Seeing a build start to finish, asking questions, engaging with the creator. Now it’s just “GETTIN SOME DANK WHEELZ 4 DA WHIP” [500 likes]

eh.... instagram is just giving them a platform

for years now theres been large roving packs of them with tacked on plastic body kits and overlarge stereos that make the windows vibrate.. and fart cans... and often as not cut springs... they’ll have large loud meet ups where they argue about who’s car is bestest and then go and do something that pisses off the cops

you know... the ones that give the rest of us a bad name :p

Counter take: “Casual” enthusiasts are still enthusiasts. That person you just described could be someone wanting to learn more but lacks the means to get more info, or it could be a toxic person like you described. You don’t know until you get to know them. Toxic people? Yeah I’d steer clear of them. But newbie person? Share a little bit at a time. Don’t sledgehammer them right away or you might chase them out rather than welcome them in.

I’m all for quality over quantity. I’d gladly chase 20 instagrammers out and keep 1 person coming to the table with an actual thirst for knowledge.
