It is called a joke.
When i was 5, to me, it was a truck car. And then as i got older everyone in the middle usa just called them el caminos as a generic xerox/cleanex term.

My understanding is that Ute is just slang for anything pickup truck related, including pickups themselves - not just unibody pickups or passenger cars with beds. So says Australian friend.
It’s a coupe utility as far as I’m concerned.
