W. T. ACTUAL. F.
1. You had the red.
2. Even if you didn’t, you still don’t pull this shit. You either wait, or turn into YOUR OWN DAMN LANE FIRST.
3. If you are committed 100% to pulling this shit, Don’t put on the pretense of stopping for the red with that slight hesitation—FUCKING GO FOR IT.

BMWs have the right of way. You know this.

Regardless of their rule-breaking, you could also have backed off once you saw it was clear they were nosing in where they shouldn’t.

I see this shit daily.
More often than not, they’re too busy looking for traffic from the left to even notice someone coming from in front.
I’ll give him partial credit, he realized he f-ed up and got on it to get out of the way. Most of them will just flip you off like you’re the one being a moron.

Hope he earned a rage honk. And a white BMW, who’da thunk it.

Absolutely and ikr

I absolutely had to and did.
But watch as they approach the line, there’s a slight moment of hesitation there, which rightly or wrongly I read as “I am aware of your presence and will act accordingly if not correctly”.
As it happens I was wrong. Doesn’t make them any less of an asswipe.

I’m giving them no credit. They didn’t get on anything, that was me nailing the brakes. They were too oblivious to flip anyone off.
I’ll take some credit away from myself, I could have read them better (the slight hesitation seemed to say they were at LEAST acknowledging my presence) but I’ll give no credit to them.

Depends on what you’re driving, I guess. If I was in my crappy beater truck, I might let them get real close, just to make them think that maybe they should have been the one to back off. And if they decided to brake-check me after trying to cut me off, then it would all be on dash-cam.

I’m noticing a trend in dashcam video posts on Oppo where the person posting the video could’ve driven in a more reasonable manner.
Having a dashcam and witnessing someone violate a traffic law doesn’t mean it’s carte blanche to drive badly (even if technically legally) in response.
This is not to say I’m a complete saint on the road but usually the most I engage with a driver doing something I don’t like is a with a horn honk or high beam flash. I might even get adventurous and flip someone the bird!
But I hate tailgating or otherwise putting my car closer than it needs to be to another driver. That really pisses people off and escalates situations, plus it’s just unsafe.

So this morning this asshat in a lifted F150 couldn’t maintain his lane (shocker, I know), so I did a slight toot of my horn, so he shot over three lanes (I was in the number 2, he was in the number one), and at the red light rolled down his window and started yelling, but the light turned green so I went. And he kept cutting people off to follow me.
WOW.

It’s not always unsafe. In this particular case, under these driving conditions, and at these speeds, the only harm would be to personal property: the cars themselves. If the BMW driver is willing to let insurance sort out whether or not to cover his damage for him, then I’m all too happy to send dashcam footage to the insurer.

Having a dashcam doesn’t mean you automatically “win” any traffic encounter where someone else breaks a traffic law. Let’s say this dashcam video ended with the black car plowing into the BMW instead of backing off at the last second. I find it very unlikely that any insurance company would say, “oh, the BMW didn’t stop at the intersection, they’re at fault.” Because the whole video makes it pretty obvious the car with the dashcam had plenty of time and space to wait for the BMW after the BMW made the illegal move.

Well at least you’re saying here you were also wrong. I’ve seen a few too many dashcam posts here on Oppo where folks are complaining about something someone else did, and when they post the dashcam video it’s fairly obvious the person with the dashcam could’ve handled the situation better. Not everyone else has been so forthright as you. ;)

Well, you gotta pick your battles. For example, I’m not going to go about defending my right-of-way by T-boning a turning car. And if the BMW driver had accelerated promptly in such a way that my car’s speed and path would have been unaffected, then I’m not going to go out of my way to chase them down and tailgate them for running their red light.
In the clip above, there was no tailgating until the very last moment. Before that, it was just a simple camera-car proceeding on green, and a BMW running a red light. Both saw each other, and you would think that there was an unspoken agreement that each vehicle would take its nearest lane, and perhaps they might briefly drive side-by-side until a speed differential appeared.
But no, in addition to running a red light, the BMW driver decided to swerve into the left lane (without signaling, even), cutting off the other driver. Tailgating was never part of the equation until that last second. An unexpected brake-check from the BMW is the only hypothetical version of this encounter that I’m actually willing to be part of a collision. Otherwise, you can bet that I’d be slamming on my brakes.
