Daylight saving time change in the spring really is unappreciated by my wife. Especially when we had dinner with friends until late last night. This included being put on notice that my autocross habit showed a lack of concern for the environment.

Our friend is deeply concerned with environmental impact and assumed that when I said that I “race” my car, that I was guzzling much fuel. She calmed down once I explained autocross. She was still disappointed. It’s okay.

To be fair, I am also concerned about the environment, which is part of why she was shocked at what she found not in keeping with our shared values. I simply also highly value the experience of driving well, which she didn’t realize.

Of all motorsports, autocross is probably the least impactful since they’re mostly local/community meetups and don’t involve large amounts of spectators.

If she finds out that Formula 1 exists, her head may implode.

If you wanted to have an environmentally friendly response, you could always purchase carbon offsets. Given that autocross isn’t really especially fuel intensive, it presumably would not be very expensive at all.

tell this friend that pushing environmental concerns as personal consumer decisions is fcking laughable. keep telling yourself that your reusable trader joe’s bag is doing shit for the environment when the real culprit is, on a much larger scale, industrial/agricultural operations. seriously, farming is the biggest contributor to air pollution in Europe.  

also, on an even bigger asshole note (I personally don’t give anyone shit for this bc as noted above our personal choices have minuscule impact in the scheme of things, but if they started it, facts are facts): if this friend has even one child, there is literally nothing worse one can do for their personal footprint and she has zero grounds to talk shit about anyone else’s choices for the environment if she’s decided to procreate.
