Solidly meh. I didn’t hate it, selectable 4WD is awesome, and even with a bald tire it was way better in the snow than the Sonic with all-seasons. However, I still remain in the “hot damn SUVs are too big for what I want” category.
Also drove a 2014-ish Escape, and that didn’t change my opinions on SUVs either. Just give me a slight lift on a smaller car and I’ll be happy.

My mom had a 2004 4.2 LS and it sounded great.
We loved it.

I mean, it was fun to drive in the snow, but man, I do not want one.

Works for me.

you clearly need a big, black Tahoe, (and some sunglasses) :)

Give me a few years, and that’s a legitimate possibility.

joking aside I agree - I much prefer to be low and zippy

The best part by far of those was the engine. Imagine a world where GM didn’t give up on the atlas. You could obstensably buy a Silverado with either a gas or diesel i6 and that would have been amazing.

I drove one just like this all over AZ. The 4wd helped a lot on some of the steep/loose gravel, but the whole truck itself was just meh, normal mid-00s GM generica.
However, as BOF SUVs go, this was one of the smaller and more manageable ones. Definitely not even comparable to most crossovers today .

I will agree, it felt a bit smaller than the Pathfinder I drove last summer (even though a Focus disappeared from view when it pulled up behind me today).

This was the exact one.
I know where it is, so I’ll probably buy it back when I get the chance and restore it.

When I got a Santa Fe in 2011 the fuel gauge immediately died and I got a TrailBlazer as a loaner while it was being fixed. It helped convince me that I made the right choice with a crossover. I just couldn’t believe how little space there was inside it for being similar on the outside. Other than that it was just meh. Engine was smooth. Bad GM plasticky interior. Comfy enough seats. Felt heavy to drive.

Sounds like you need a Subaru of some sort, or maybe an SX4.

GM SUVs on the GMT360 frame, of the mid 2000s, are a bundle of meh.
Solid points to GM though for making the six cylinder engine option an inline 6.
Heck, the GMT800 trucks of similar vintage had more personality. Not by much, mind you...

VS. Plasticky interior, hard seats, heavy and rolly to drive, noisy engine on most modern cars.

Might I ask why you need a slight lift?

Ground clearance. With the amount of snow we get and how bad the plowing is here, it’s nice having something where the bumper isn’t pushing snow around all day.

Yeah buddy!

See that’s where it shines. A perfectly innocuous transport with enough options to keep you comfortable, a drivetrain that can get you anywhere, and the best god damned engine GM has built in ages
The TB does just about anything you’d need, and it does those things without you noticing it exists

So pretty much a BOF SUV or a truck?
I mean most CUVs have little to no extra clearance over sedans.
Good tires are your best bet.
