It’s the maximum range of what I calculated to be safe. Pretty sure I could make the car basically perfect for under 5k in parts and a few weekends. That’s assuming a 30-35k resale afterwards, leaving room for profit and covering my time.

My thinking was this: Under 10k, keep it. 10-20 flip it. Because over 10 it wouldn’t have been a solo venture. But we just couldn’t make it work comfortably.

Did anyone follow that forum thread of this guy who started tearing down and redoing his busted AMG engine in his garage to the end? Did he do it, or did it end like so many other ambitious projects?

Ok, it’s worth a bit more than I figured once it’s fixed up then.

Still, if you’re having a hard time making the numbers work, I hope the buyer has a similar skill set with these things.

I want to say he did it but I don’t know for sure. That guy was a dumbass though. No research before or during any of that. He caused himself so much trouble. He was also unlucky in that his dealer was apparently stupid too. Everything that could’ve gone wrong in that whole story did go wrong.

The numbers work at 20k. It’s largely that me and the people I talked to don’t have the money, or couldn’t round up the money comfortably in time. But yeah, I hope he knows what he’s doing too.

Do you still remember the source? I’d like to check myself. Last I saw was him tearing it down while being confident that it would be way cheaper than ordering a new AMG engine to the tune of over 20K. Which isn’t that hard. His wife was the bread winner so he had time as a stay at home dad to work on it.

That guy (Seth) is on Grassroots Motorsports. He succeeded and has been driving the van, but is consolidating his fleet with young drivers coming on line, and is selling the R63 as well as his CTS-V wagon.

My god, that’s both shocking and so sad.

No way I’d be able to fix/maintain such a beast, but it’s not only an R63, it’s a white R63. Just my kind of minivan.

Looking for anything in particular?

Head bolts and gaskets have been replaced.

Service history is complete. Everything looks like it’s been close to on time or early. Based on notes I’m guessing you’re around 56k miles and may need (front?) brakes soon? Should be due for a B service and spark plugs at 60k.

Could you say what dealer, i called Bellevue and Seattle neither would say it was theirs or much about it. So i suspect it was Lynnwood, and would like to take it back to the same dealer for the maintenance.

For sure. But with the trans work it needs and probably head bolts too, it’s right at the limit of what you might call a good idea.

All good no worries. I have come across one weird issue, this seems different then the low speed 1st\2nd gear lurch. This has happened twice while in manual shift mode - either true manual or sport\manual because i flipped the paddles. But when under acceleration in 4th gear - and you lift off the throttle. There is an lurching sensation and the car\trans bucks a little.
