not the actual car I found, but just like it
UPDATE: My lil’ sis got the car key at her birthday dinner last night. She immediately freaked out and went outside looking for the car, jumping up and down like an 8 year old at Christmas. My nephew took video, but she made him stop when she noticed so she could “compose herself”. She absolutely loves the car and how it drives. She called me still giggling and pinching herself. It was a complete surprise. 10/10 success. It was worth all the work we put in.
My sister holding the keys to her new RSX
ORIGINAL POST: As some of you may remember, I was looking for an Integra for my sister. I’ve been working with my Dad to find her one like the car she loved so much and gave up for an Odyssey when she had kids. Well, I found no Integras of that generation worth getting in Texas or Indy, but I found a nice silver 2006 RSX, and it was at Ed Martin Acura in Indianapolis. This is really convenient, so I put Dad on to it. It’s a 5-speed, really clean, cloth interior, sun roof, about 135k on the clock. From what I gathered on the web site, it’s part of this dealer’s foray into the heavily used market usually occupied by Craigslist, an effort to make more than just sending cars to auction.
So my mom and dad went down last Saturday, inspected and drove it. It’s as good as it looked on my screen. The dealer advertised $3990, which my research said is a little high but not out of line. Plus, it’s not in Texas; it’s right there, which is worth something. I told Dad if he could get it for $3500, that would be a pretty good deal.
So, they offer the junior salesman $3500, which doesn’t make him happy. He says he has to talk to the manager, because of course he does. Comes back and says no. The price is firm. Now, this kid probably dismissed my mom as just another nice little old lady. That was his mistake, and he’s not the first to make it. Mom says, “That’s okay, never mind. But hey, when it gets to where you’re getting rid of it at auction, you can call us first and see if we’re still in the market.”
Before they could leave, the kid goes to talk to the manager again. They accepted $3500.
My sis gets the car as a surprise present Sunday at her birthday party. I may repost this with an update and pics.

Nice - one of our assistants at work has one like that except auto, (silver, 160hp motor, etc) I was surprised those weren’t more popular... maybe a little overpriced when new.

They pulled the manager close on me when I offered $14,800 for a new ‘88 Camry wagon 5M in early‘89. I was backing out of the space where I parked when the manager ran out and said we had a deal. Nevermind that I had bought an ‘87 300D, also new, from the very same dealership 18 months earlier. My sales guy from the Benz side had told them not to fuck with me.

Nice! Those are good cars, just hard to find one that hasn’t been modified to hell and back. Glad it worked out!

that’s why I prefer buying from smaller dealers, you can haggle right then and there, no “waiting for the manager to approve”. Saves so much time for both parties involved.

Yes!, especially with the previous Integras, it’s nigh impossible to find something without at least an aftermarket exhaust and some kind of coil overs. Usually lowered, too. This one was clean AND stock.

Yeah. But in the flip side, usually an established dealer will put at least some effort into making sure he doesn’t sell garbage since he has a full service department. His reputation counts a bit more to him. That’s why we didn’t do a PPI on this one. On Craigslist or a small dealer, I wouldn’t dare skip that step.

Yup. The only thing about that is you have to really be willing to walk and lose the car. If you are, it’s kind of cathartic.

Nice! Sorry she lost her head in all the excitement though! :)

She used to have a good head on her shoulders.

Not a lot of head room in those cars anyway.

That’s my problem. Usually by the time I’m taking numbers in too in love with the car to consider walking away. At the point the numbers stop mattering. I was reeeeeally glad that the haggling on my car was “I talked to my wife and the credit union, if you’ll take 10 grand it’s a done deal.” Followed by “...yeah okay”

It’s easy to forget that there’s always another choice around the corner. I almost fell into bad deals a couple of times before I remembered.

Good choice. Our ‘02 ran to 200,000 miles without a problem. We sold it and it is still going strong!
If the suspension rattles over bumps, it needs sway bar links which is a relatively cheap and easy fix if you get them through rock auto. I would have a mechanic change them as you may need a torch to get them unbolted.
