To paint or not to paint? That is the question.

I don’t give a shit which one is nobler. The exhaust from the XJ is out for a few days. Do I waste the time and money to slap a coat of high heat spray paint over the top of the rustish looking (normal) exhaust or do I just slap it back in?

The wife is over the whole project, so it’s whatever will make money or help get it sold. If you were buying a car, would something like this hold any extra weight for you?

Here’s what I am dealing with...

I would be more likely to think you’re trying to hide something by painting the exhaust.

Is the rest of the bottom clean, or is it rusty too?

Eh, I’d pass. Unless the exhaust is really rusty and sticks out with a clean undercarriage.

Plus you know you’d get a phone call about smoke coming off of the car when the exhaust heats up and the paint burns off.

I wouldn’t bother. As a buyer, seeing a painted (and not something like ceramic coated from the factory or professionally done) on an old jeep would be more likely to make me think the seller is either hiding something or has had questionable methods and priorities for maintenance and upkeep.

If you’re going to paint it, have it media blasted or chemically strip the rust, otherwise it’ll just continue to oxidize and flake off with the paint looking doubly as bad. At least the rust is uniform.
