I am looking for a family friendly overlander since we cant put a baby seat in a D90. I have been looking at the GX 470s and 460s.
What are your thoughts?
I have also found one for sale that is very built, much further than I would ever go but a nice rig non the less.

150k miles + $34,500 = CP

You need to talk to LionZoo about 460's and if you have questions about 470 let me know.
$34,500 doesn’t seem too crazy for that level of build. The only worry is the mods, which look okay and the fact that there hasn’t been any airflow into that radiator since they added 2 lightbars in front of it. man thats stupid.

“Built” is an understatement.

meh, we paid about $17,500 for a Gx470 with only 30k less miles and zero mods. Those suckers add up. The fact that this is 4 years newer, clean as a whistle and fully built out makes it the right price for the turnkey overland market.
Figure $24,000 for the base truck based on prices Im seeing, and go from there. There is a lot of money in those mods, the suspension kit alone is well over $5000, figure another 5 for armor and bumpers, to saying nothing of the interior mods, tires, etc. Is it worth that? To the right buyer.

I don’t know much on pricing of “built” rigs like that, but it seems overpriced.
Why not go for a GX470 with lower miles and take care of maintenance & mods for probably less than the 460?

Nice rig.
I like the build stage too much to buy it finished myself, but diff’rent strokes. You should be able to find something to look at between mud and expo..

I thought mods don’t add value.
You overlanders are niche bunch so maybe that helps, but not to me.
FWIW $17.5 with 120k miles is A LOT easier pill to swallow.

Im with you, but truthfully you will spend a lot more than $34,500 building this exact vehicle if thats the goal. depends on if you want turnkey or the fun of building it up.

You’re better off doing a 96 month loan on a new base model Power Wagon. It will use the same amount of fuel, go the same or better off road, and have much more room for hauling stuff. Plus have 150k less miles.
IF the truck sits too high and it’s difficult to get the kids in, just keep a small trampoline in the bed and use it to bounce them into the back seat. Trust me, they’ll be fine with it.

I have a 470 and my parents have a 2014 460. Both are great. I will say the refinement between my generation and my parents is rather impressive. The 460 is silent. Also in stalk form they are excellent on dirt back roads with over a foot of snow.

Good to know, thanks for the input.

“Stalk form” can you tell I’m tired?

Emotional response: all of the hell yes. The GX ticks all of my boxes for a potential Xterra replacement should the day ever come.
What you should do is source the double-capacity gas tank from a Land Cruiser Prado (i.e., the original Toyota from whence the GX came).

I had thought the exact same thing! I have been weighing my options for a GX against other vehicles that get much better mileage. Plenty of people run trucks like these so maybe you just get used to it?

I agree, there is no way to replicate this vehicle for 34.5K. It is also total overkill for what I want to do but the value of this truck is what caught my eye, plus it just looks bad ass!
I have also been looking at the 470s, lower price point and probably just as good for family surf trips. What has your experience been with them? Any insight?

I like the 470, so much so I wrote a thing about them . Then I bought one and my opinions have mostly not changed but here are all the bad things no one will tell you till after you buy them. Don’t let that scare you away, just be aware.
1. There is a secondary air injection pump on the later models that can go bad and be expensive to remedy. It’s not super common but it happens. You can buy a cheap bypass kit if passing a visual emissions inspection isn’t a worry.
2. The starter motor can go bad and replacing the starter is a pain (under in the intake tract). Same as above, not common, but not rare.
3. The rear suspension airbags will need replacing every 100k, or replaced with coils.
4. the height adjust sensors can go bad, they aren’t cheap. Again replace with coils and forgo air suspension
5. freakin’ timing belts.
6. Keep on top of ball joint service with ANY light duty Toyota (4runner, GX, etc). They wear normal but fail fast and hard when they go.
Thats is for the technical, as for as the personal
1. I hate the rear door, but it has its pros and cons and it may not bug you.
2. The stock adjustable suspension is both the best and worst. its THE BEST most smoothest riding light trail suspension in the world. So good. The adjustability means the corners on the road aren’t bad either. But...the spring rates are way too soft and there isn’t enough uptravel in the system, to do it right for harder off roading you need a slightly stronger rate coil front and rear and a lift.
3. Thirsty - 14-15 combined mpg, about 19 highway. But holy crap that engine sounds and pulls good. Pulls our 3500 camp trailer like it wasn’t even back there.
Thats about as much as I know about them. People work hard to try and get a nav free model because they don’t want the HVAC to go away if it breaks...whatever its never going to break and the UI is fine. Plus the mark levinson sound system is GOOD.
I don’t know much about the 460 other than its got a better rear diff (stronger) and can handle bigger tires better without fear of blowing up, plus the engine is timing chain again.
