It appears you have stolen a CompUSA and placed it in your garage.

“You too can have an amazing body just like this guy’s, which is totally hidden from view by baggy 90s clothing! All you have to do is use your computer while sitting on a table next to your monitor, with one foot on the table, while placing the keyboard on your lap, and not looking at the monitor! Only with a Compaq Presario!”

Aw yeah, that’s some good nostalgia there. Time to go listen to some 4 Non Blondes, Ace of Base, Snow, and Meatloaf before watching Conan O’Brien take over for Letterman on Late Night .

Family got one of these babies Christmas 1995 as our first PC, it was a freaking a revelation, man. I spent hours going through the tutorials and video walkthroughs, it was the damn future to someone who had only ever seen a dedicated word processing machine and typewriter to that point.
3D Ultra Pinball still rules

They’re shit. I can’t remember how many power supplies and video cards I went through on my Elite 8xxx.

Hey, I’ve got one of those monitors with the saddlebag speakers. It’s up in my attic. I had forgotten about it until I saw yours.

My first PC. Came with wonderful Windows ME and out-of-the-box blue screens.

My first PC that was exclusively mine:
Staples display model (so discount, plus it came with a few extra games). Picked up the 17" monitor as a refurb as well. 233 MHz Pentium II, 32MB RAM, 6.5GB 5.25" HD, ATI Rage IIc 2MB 3D accelerator. I upgraded mine to 64MB, a 12MB Voodoo 2, and an Aureal soundcard.

She was a software architect for them. Unfortunately her whole division was laid off shortly after the Lenovo takeover.

A good friend of mine had one from new as his first and main computer. It was a later one that came with XP. He had a a Mag Innovision LCD with it, rather than the CRT. That one died about 5 years ago, and he no longer has it. He still has the monitor though.
We now have two of them (maybe three, I forget). He still looks occasionally to try and find any of the color kits. So do I.

I’ll admit, my frame of reference for price is off, the couple that we have we got for free. To be fair, most of what we get, we get for free.

Where do you get this stuff for few
![]() 03/06/2018 at 20:47 |
|
Mostly from friends/family and acquaintances. We still refurbish computers to donate to high school students who need them. We are still in contact with a teacher at our old high school, who in turn tends to get stuff from other teachers. Also, it seems that once you tell someone that you work on computers for underprivileged kids, people are quick to give you stuff (
see also: “I have a computer that is taking up space/I want to get rid of... do you want it?”)
. Even college professors cluing us in to/getting us stuff that was just going to be thrown out anyway. Quite soon, you end up with a healthy (
sometimes too healthy
) stream of computers coming in.
We use what we can. A good number of systems get a new lease on life, ready for someone who really needs it. Some ( OK, quite a few ) we hang onto because we think they are old and cool ( ‘80s and ‘90s are our favorites ). Others are just old and not really useful ( If we get another Dimension 4600, I’m going to scream! ).
It’s crazy some of the old stuff we’ve gotten over the years.

yo fuck P4s man
also that’s pretty sweet. i had gotten a bunch o’ P4s and pentium d rigs for free a couple years ago and did the same, donated to an organization that gives them to kids who need computers
![]() 03/07/2018 at 20:47 |
|
The P4s are just annoying to deal with. They aren’t useful now, most aren’t that special, and there were a lot of them. At least a lot of the Pentium D computers were easily upgraded to early Core 2 Duo for real cheap (an early mid-high range C2D is typically $10 or so on eBay). Now though, we’re finally getting away from getting as many of those.
It’s really awesome to be able to give someone without much such a necessary tool in today’s world. Knowing how much of a difference it can make is a real motivator to continue, plus, we find it a lot of fun!

too old to be useful, too new to be retro
