Isn’t that a diesel additive?

That’s def, yo.

You’re oil burner is all out of pee juice.
![]() 02/25/2018 at 08:30 |

Well, it’s sort of a diesel additive, but not to the engine

Urea tank running low on a diesel. Looks like a GM thing but i cannot remember a GM diesel that needs Urea. I know BMW and Mercedes diesels have them for Bluetec/AdBlue.

I’m sort wondering if peeing in the tank would work, but then again it’s a company car (not mine) , so why not have them fill it with premium Peugeot branded pee juice!
![]() 02/25/2018 at 08:34 |

Yes, exactly that’s what it is! It’s on a Peugeot 308, which has an approximate range of 21000 km on one tank of Urea, and as the car has about 41000 km now, I’m guessing they forgot to check during the service in December.

Really? I’ve never seen maker specific DEF.
![]() 02/25/2018 at 08:39 |

Here you can see them clearly branded for Peugeot and Citroën (in front of a 308 in the colour my dad should have ordered) It’s probably just a re-brand of more generic DEF, just like some manufacturers have their ‘own’ Coolant and DOT.

Diesel - Urea fluid is low meaning much higher emissions...?

Burnt out brake pads? Your parking brake is set.

It either goes into limp home mode and has reduced power or once you turn it off you won’t be able to turn on again.
Exept when you’re a polish lory driver then it has no consequences at all because you have a defeat device.
![]() 02/25/2018 at 08:50 |

Well, it still has enough Urea for about 2100 km, however after that there would be risk of higher emissions. But how they deal with that is a bit surprising, to say the least.
![]() 02/25/2018 at 08:54 |

This P eugeot indeed does the latter. When it reaches empty, it will just disable the engine once turned off , until the level is filled sufficiently.
Polish lorry drivers are an inventive bunch...

Well, the parking brake was indeed set, should have clarified I meant the left light, haha.

You are low on DEF/Cow piss and if it gets too low, you will be put into limp mode which means walking will be faster.

Your car needs to pee so badly, it has two warning lights stating so much.
Pull over and let the damn thing take care of its business already.
![]() 02/25/2018 at 09:38 |

Right on the first one, however the Peugeot 308 doesn’t go in to limp mode, it will just refuse to start once empty.

Yes, blue needs to be added!

Yup, many tractors with tier 4+ emissions control (urea injection equipped) work that way. They will keep running with an empty urea tank, but will refuse to restart. Used to be, when fuel was cheap farmers up here would just leave their tractors idling from about mid-November until mid-March to avoid having to deal with cold starts... You could do the same sort of thing with a urea injected tractor, except that diesel is expensive enough these days that just shutting it off and going to get more addblue is the sounder financial decision. Though it does come in 55 gallon drums, so running out is really something you can only blame yourself for.

Some more interesting thoughts on this Adblue stuff.
If you do the maths on the chemical reaction that’s supposed to happen with this additive, the tank would have to fill half the boot of a car, to get the sort of range people are getting. I didn’t actually check this, but if it is true this means that these systems don’t really do much in real life.
And apparently (again some more fact checking needed) AdBlue is sold for 25 times the money it costs to make. So that would explain why citroen/peugeot make their own.

Yeah, I remember calculating once that continuous use takes more Adblue/km than you would want to carry in a passenger car. My bet is they only use it when emissions get above a certain threshold, as to stay within the Euro6 norm.
Wow, I didn’t know that Adblue is that overprised!
