Well, that’s one way to brace a roof. Not the right way mind you, but a way. This place was built in 1956. The tree was added more recently I assume.
Home buying sucks.

Yes it does. At the beginning of the week, I was all set to close, then the appraisal inspection turned up what may be mold in the garage. Bank owned foreclosure, and they won’t kick in a dime for repair, so its probably going to fall through, unless it turns out to be something cheap.
There’s another solid prospect nearby, but it doesn’t have all the features I really liked in the other one - the previous owners appear to have gone broke almost at the end of a major renovation - new kitchen, new bathrooms, new roof, new solid doors, new flooring throughout, upgraded millwork, finished walk out basement with a bar and ornamental fireplace, etc. - its fixed up better than I could afford to do, but if it doesn’t qualify for conventional financing, forget it.

Wow, that’s a new one. I guess spending a C-note on a bunch of 2x4s, was a bridge too far.

They forgot to send the lumber to the mill

I found mice crap in my home to be... thats about it... oh and the garage is wired with 12 gauge wiring and electrical taped together.

Its economical! Why give Lowes your hard earned money on 2x4s when you can use the lumber from your very own yard!

I wish I had taken a picture of this: one of my houses was built by a fellow who worked at the nearby wood flooring plant. The attic bracing was made from flooring planks that failed quality control. Each had a visual imperfection. These days, they would have cut out the imperfection and pieced it together, but back then, one bad spot meant the whole board was tossed. Strangely enough, the house didn’t have wood floors - it was carpet on a concrete slab.

Dover, Delaware. I passed on it, moving into the other house on Saturday.
Really a shame, it was a damn nice house for that price.

technically, they have the potential to become 2x4s.
and they’re straighter than most of the 2x4s I’ve gotten at Menards.

Honestly, if they were connected well, I’d probably just leave them be.
I’ve had even worse luck at Home Dumpo than at Menards. I miss real lumber yards.
