It’s finally starting to snow around here and it’s like everyone forgot how to drive. We don’t use salt and barely use sand around here so snow tires are a must, but even people who can afford a Tesla Model X can’t afford the common sense of Phish: “The tires are the things on your car that make contact with the road.” IF hippies can understand this you think others would.

nice. we got 10" of snow last night, they probably won’t plow for a few days, and in this town we don’t do snow days. lifted subaru ftw.

I’m a hippie who owns a non-hippie vehicle equipped with all wheel drive and snow tires. It’s still right side up.

i drive a 93 hyundai excel with bald summer tires and can take on 2 feet of snow without any issues

Had someone on the FP tell me a couple of winters ago that just because they can’t afford winter tires, that shouldn’t infringe their right to drive. Then there was some rambling about the WRC Finland Rallye and how the driver is more import than tire choice.
This episode has taught me to try and stay out of this discussion. There’s no sense trying to talk reason to the summer tire club.

am selling my impreza, in my experience, these summer tyre club folks are basically my potential buyers
sold my last impreza, it was for sale for 2 weeks, then we had a blizzard and it sold that night with multiple people competing to come see it.
had a BMW convertible owner show up on bald summer tires to check out my impreza this time after a day of snow.

The summer tire club meetings kept losing membership. Last month there were only three of us so I decided to hand in my club badge

Can you do it in a place where half the roads have a 8-12 % grade? Also we don’t Salt or sand so it’s just ice .
![]() 02/23/2018 at 13:39 |
|
20% grade or higher only

Meh, common sense and all season will get you through most winter. Winter tires are great but are they an absolute necessity? No. Pure summer tires aren’t really used by the general population. I’ll bet 99.9% of the cars in your pics had all seasons and not actual summer tires.

Yeah, we don’t do snow days, but we did have an avalanche or two last year....3-4feet overnight and my wife and I still had to go to work.

All seasons are great if you live in a flat area, but won’t work in the mountains. I had to pull my brothers awd ford explorer up my driveway last year....with my STI. on a 12% grade even at 5mph All season won’t stop you or let you go up.
Well sure they work but you’ll be in the way of all the locals with snow tires.

I’ll let you try to get out of my driveway....if you make it you’ll get a high five and a beer.

we never get big dumps like that, but we also haven’t been above freezing since october, so we’ve got about 5' on the ground. running out of places to put it at my house.
actually, we did get above freezing one day, the roads turned to shit, and this happened:

Our cars are more closely related than I remembered! What color’s your interior?

Oyster (creamy white) leather, aluminum trim, black headliner.

I’m just glad it’s finally snowing in Tahoe. Model X won’t be missed, although at least it could probably have made it up Donner Pass instead of blocking a lane like a RWD Model S last time I was up there. Poor Police Expedition couldn’t push it cause it probably weighed about as much.

know the feeling,.... we basically hit the limit of our honda snowblowers throw last year....and it can throw 55ft ....

i need to bite the bullet and buy a honda snowblower. i’ve had 2 cheap craftsmans and they never really work right.

Counterpoint:

Yeah, i ended up buying mine used last year from a neighbor who bought a bigger version. They aren’t cheap but they run forever and throw snow better than any other brand I’ve seen.

General altimax Arctics. Great for the price, but I’ll be grabbing nokians next winter

we had just over 600" last year....now this year it’s only been 100" or so and if feels like nothing.....normal is around 300"

Nobody really uses summer tires either.

Nice! Anything but black with wood trim makes me happy. I’ve got Saddle Brown with the wood trim (dunno if it’s the standard one... it’s very dark) and black headliner. Also LeMans Blue and the same wheels, but non-xDrive sedan.

Incline Village, NV. My house is over the 7000ft line, we get 2-3x the snow the lower elevations in town get.

I remember the first time I drove over Donner summit in a snow storm (in my 1989 Subaru XT with all season tires). It was a shit show. I think I accidentally made a lane for like 10 miles. SUV’s and trucks off the road everywhere. I don’t think we got to Reno unit 3 PM then had to hoof it to Twin Falls.
Just to confirm Montanan’s can’t drive in snow either.

All seasons or snows on that Soob? I have this argument often about the snowbility of awd with all seasons vs fwd with snow tires.

studded snow tires, but I am in fairbanks AK and we don’t see pavement from october to march. All hardpacked snow and ice.
