Seems inline with the prices I’ve seen. I didn’t end up looking at one because I couldn’t find a higher mileage one, so everything near me was over 12k

They are big compared to your Miata. Also, that is pretty high mileage, but you know that.

If you’re looking for something reliable and fun as a DD I’d imagine this is pretty good, I know they’re pretty reliable. Just know it won’t be as fun as the Miata

Yeah the cheapest ones on Autotrader and cars.com are $12k. Cheapest I can find locally on CL is $8000 for a higher-mileage r-spec 2.0t

Practicality (tm)

How is the longevity of Hyundai’s 3.8?

“won’t be as fun as a Miata” you might actually be wrong there, given that it’s two seconds quicker to 60 and Kansas is 99.999999% straight roads and on-ramps.

I don’t like the pre-facelift styling, but that’s subjective

I found the driver’s seat to be well positioned but poorly padded, didn’t seem like a good place to be for a large number of miles.

Everything else I loved about the car. The seats are why we got a Volvo.

Not a fan of the pre-facelift styling either but, eh. Beggars, choosers. Will probably get an aftermarket grill that doesn’t have the Hyundai badge. Going to go test drive it later today.

Im pretty sure there was someone on Oppo a while back who had one of these, if not it was on a FB group I’m in.

They mentioned something about a weak differential if you plan on tracking it.

Overall is pretty lackluster. A family friend has the same one here, and it just didn’t have that wow factor for me. That, and there are better manual sports coupes out there that deliver better and are around the same used price.

Good cars - my friend has one exactly like that with a little less mileage and has only ever had one or two negligible problems with it (I can’t recall what they are off the top of my head), but both he and I would recommend it!

Always thought these had potential. I remember learning that the manual gearbox is kind weak, but I’m sure since you won’t be getting the turbo and tuning it, it should be fine at stock power levels.

Even the hottest tunes for the pre-facelift 2.0t don’t match the stock v6 numbers, much less a tuned V6 (eliminates a mid-range torque dip)

Bummer the Miata isn’t working out for you. I heard the Genesis is okay but the steering feel supposedly isn’t all that communicative.

...Send me the hardtop liner if you sell the car. I want part of your Miata to live on in mine.

Plans are changing. Genesis will likely happen but the Miata isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Drove the GenCoupe tonight, loved it. Steering is definitely numb but it’s still a pretty ideally fun daily driver. Makes decent noises too.

The 3.8 makes good noises, it just needs the right exhaust like a VQ or else it could sound like absolute crap.

If it’s of any consolation mine’s got a faint oil leak, noisy lifters, and the driver’s side window won’t go down because it’s caught on the wiring that’s worked itself free. Still can’t decide between K-series, J-series, LFX, or Ford/Mazda/Jaguar V6 swap.

You know in your heart the Duratec 32v is the proper answer.

I honestly like how the 3.8 sounds stock. Enough noise in the cabin to be aware that you’re driving a sports car. Just like the muffler I put on the Miata. I was driving alongside the Miata last month in the Buick and I had my fiancee punch it and I could barely hear the Miata over the wind noise, but inside the car it sounds nice and sporty without much drone. Love it. Flowmaster Delta Flow 60 welded into the stock exhaust system. Retained the cat and resonator and all that. Highly recommend for OEM+ builds.

Yeah I was thinking “oh if I dump the car on a dealership before the engine blows I can at least get some money out of it” but... I have like $2000 into parts. Suspension, the hardtop, etc. Screw that. Not throwing all that away. I’ll spend a grand putting a new engine in the silly thing and keep enjoying it. A grey gencoupe and grey NB Miata is a hell of a pairing.

If you end up rebuilding the Miata motor, then use the total seal rings on the pistons to further cut down on oil consumption. Same story with me, I’ve sunk thousands in the car (shocks, exhaust, repairs, hardtop, 2 sets of wheels and tires, etc.) that I’m beyond committed to this car. Then again, I knew I was going to take this car with me to my grave as soon as I started the conversion from tan to black interior.

Hm. I was thinking of just buying a new engine and dumping it in. And same story here as soon as I removed the soft top. I was like “whelp I love it but absolutely nobody else will understand my motivation. o well”
