Deep down, I really want an N54 powered 135i, but the HPFP has always scared me. Yesterday I discovered something, FCP Euro has a remanufactured HPFP with their lifetime warranty. The 135 is moving further up my next car list for that.

Yes. Yes indeed. Although my RWD fun car will more realistically be a Camaro or Mustang, I would love to have a 135 to park next to my 328xi

What is an HPFP?

High pressure fuel pump. They are pretty much guarenteed to fail.

They’ve gotten pretty cheap now.

Don’t you put that on me!

Fuel pump never scared me with mine (fewer problems with the warranty replacements and a pretty extensive warranty attached to the replaced pumps); getting the carbon buildup on the valves blasted off seemed a much more imposing issue.
That and the terminal understeerWHOA WHERE DID THAT SNAP OVERSTEER COME FROM behavior. But a reasonably pleasant car when driven at 7/10ths or so once the run-flats were off the damn thing.

I already have a DI car, so carbon isn’t something that would scare me off.

the more I look at these the more I like them.

I have this very part in my N55 335xi because the original failed. Actually I got it from eEuroparts. It came with the standard BMW remanufactured parts warranty.
Honestly the $350 price for the part and a couple hours of labor on top of that shouldn’t make or break the choice to buy the car. If it goes, it goes, and you’re still paying a 3-figure repair bill.
The bigger reliability issue on the N54 is the turbos. The single turbo on the N55 is less prone to assorted issues, but has less tuning headroom. Both motors use the same HPFP so you’re screwed on that either way.

If I got one, the plan would eventually involve a big single.

“Pretty cheap” was out of my price range. The 10k I paid for the 3 was about the top of my budget. Which is the main reason I chose the 328 over a 330 or 335. Maybe in 2 years when the 328 is paid off they will be cheap enough for me lol.

Ah that makes sense

my ears were burning for a second there, but I’m dyslexic so thats probably why. I try not to be scary.

Suspension tweaks including rear subframe bushings can tame that behavior.

The HPFP has an extended warranty from BMW anwyay.

Are the fuel pumps that tough to swap out? My S8 has two and they’re tight up on top of the valve cover. Super simple to remove and replace. Sure they will be stupid expensive, but if you can do the labor, why worry? Set aside a budget for a big repair and enjoy the car.

From short forum searching, it can take anywhere from 1-6 hours depending on your competency.

I can’t think it’s tougher than mine, and I’ll do the carbon cleaning again when needed. Shouldn’t take nearly as long next time.

So not too bad. In sure you can do other repairs as you go. I did that when I decarboned my intake valves. Replaced a bunch of other gaskets and did plugs and coolant at the same time. So not too bad if you can piggyback other repairs.
