REPOST FOR THE AFTERNOON CROWD:
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!
gave me an idea:
I propose an OppositeLock Bad Idea fund, to give grants to Opponauts who may not need the money, but can apply for grants to buy a Bad Idea car. Like any other grant, the money would be held in an escrow account, and those who wish to get some cash would have to apply, giving good reason they ought to get the money. It would be funded solely by donations, and grants could be given for just an occasion as Zoidberg mentioned.

There may need to be a contingency fund for purchasing flowers or other gifts for significant others who still aren’t amused at the appearance of another vehicle, regardless of the financial implications.

I think this is a great idea. Getting a grant would obligate the recipient to post adventures on Oppo of course.

Why is there a W123 wagon pictured in a post about bad ideas?? It’s not a bad car in any way.
![]() 02/12/2018 at 20:44 |

Because brown manual diesel wagon

So talking about funding bad ideas but posting a good one? They are reliable and built to last, that is no aging AMG money pit. Also no manual 300TD in the USA, unless they found a Getrag manual from Europe and swapped it in.

Such automotive pedantry I expect from Oppo. I see your point, but either way it’s still a car that will teach an underfunded or underexperienced owner the distinction between “durable,” and “reliable.”

here’s a bad idea:

The rust would probably be impressive if you found one. Here shovel some money into this!

I wish to apply for a grant to get my Allroad back. I would like to take it onhiking camping trips to teach my kids about nature.

Hmmmm.... Seems like a solid idea.

Hiking trips, from when the car breaks down in the country, walking to somewhere you get cell service.

Would this fund my desire to put a PRV engine into a Renault Dauphine, and yes, I will use the stock transmission because I know it can handle 55 hp it should handle 128+ hp?

i had a whole second half written up about learning self reliance to get back to civilization but i thought that wouldn’t help my cause.

If anyone has any doubts I am happy to accept any amount of your money to fuel my bad decisions.

BadStarter, and its sister sites, BadAlternator and BadBattery.
You always think of that final site after the other two.

Because this is Oppo - there are NO bad ideas. Only good ones.

So you mean I could get you guys to give me money to buy a CVT equipped 70s econobox? Awesome!
![]() 02/13/2018 at 14:09 |
|
Really - - If this gets going, I’d chip in some money, without expectations of withdrawing, for what it’s worth.
![]() 02/13/2018 at 14:15 |

Thats an amazing idea, where do I send my money.
![]() 02/13/2018 at 14:21 |

Here is a Brown Manual Diesel that is more inline with the “bad decisions” fund theme.

I’d like to apply to sit on the grant committee.
![]() 02/13/2018 at 14:55 |

Same here. The OppositeLock community here and Oppotalk on Facebook is pretty big.
I’d throw in $10 a month just for the laughs.

If you want a grant to buy a DAF then apply - once it’s set up.
![]() 02/13/2018 at 14:56 |
|
I’ll hash it out. It’ll be stupid and awesome.
![]() 02/13/2018 at 14:57 |

Maybe any grant has a condition that says 10% of the funds will go toward S.O. appeasement?
![]() 02/13/2018 at 14:58 |
|
I’m not really on the book of faces - is that basically the same people as here or no?
![]() 02/13/2018 at 15:06 |

I don’t know. I just joined.
![]() 02/13/2018 at 15:13 |
|
You’ll need to budget spousal appeasement into your initial grant application.
![]() 02/13/2018 at 15:17 |
|
For some of us, that means we would need $10k in order to buy a $500 LeMons car...
![]() 02/13/2018 at 15:20 |
|
That’s not my problem. Request the funds you need in your initial application or find some other way to mitigate spousal upheaval.
![]() 02/13/2018 at 15:20 |

Yes, only the best Dutch econoboxes for me!
Also, you get rewarded several internets for knowing I meant a DAF!
![]() 02/13/2018 at 15:21 |
|
And now you know why my commitment is to contribute funds, not withdraw! :) :) :)
![]() 02/13/2018 at 15:25 |

I just want to be involved in clerical fashion.
![]() 02/13/2018 at 15:31 |

Me too - I’d love to be on the committee evaluating projects (as would every Oppo, let’s face it).

Would this fund be able to make grants on contingency?
As an example my work may be selling a propane powered International 345 V-8 that I’d be curious to try and convert to road use and stuff in a Travelall. Could I apply for the grant with plans to return the funds if I lost the auction?
![]() 02/13/2018 at 17:47 |

I’d consider donating, because I like the idea of supporting automotive DIY culture and preserving weird enthusiast vehicles. I would definitely donate if you actually set it up as a tax-exempt nonprofit (which would be a good idea anyway because it would provide at least some structure and rules around managing the money).

I think that’s an awesome idea! It might spawn an arms race of automotive craziness. Get some interesting projects going
