I bought a thing. This is my 10th of similar things, but this thing is different.

When I was in college in Massachusetts, I used to mountain bike Lynn Woods and Carlisle 2-3 times a week. I was on an older, but solid bike, my best friend had a 2001 Trek 6700 with 27!!! gears. It was the bleeding edge of what poor college students could afford, and afford to destroy and fix. Which we did. A lot.

Anyway.

I was perusing the local listings and one came up that was clean and obviously stored inside when not being ridden. Still shod in original tires that had tread told me this bike was not well-used and needed to be freed.

As I am very familiar with the bike from when Dave rode his, I struck the deal, honestly for about half of what i could have paid in other towns for the bike.

It’s a little short for me, but I’m debating whether I hold onto it for my growing boys, or clean it, sell it to someone who will use it, and then hunt the next deal.

Still, I’m pretty stoked over it, and how clean it is for the price I paid.

I passed on a Giant ‘90’s bike last week. Would have been free. Looking back I should have snagged it, but also would have just sat with a bunch of other clutter.

I had a 1997 Giant Iguana SE (3) as my first true Mountain bike. RS Quadra shock in front, STX shifting and Alvio cranks, great bike.

By the time I was done with it, it had a Judy 100 on the front and the drivetrain had been replaced twice, new double wall wheels, and XT V-Brakes were added.

My Brother-in-Law still uses it for his commute to his job as a Professor.

It was a vibrant matte blue frame with yellow lettering, a bright red fork and in the late-90s to early-00s, I was running green Michelin tires.

My friends called it the clown bike, but it ripped.

This was a hybrid, I looked it up and decided it wasn’t worth my time as its likely need some maintenance.

If I didn’t already have a 6100 trek I likely would have picked it up.

I also don’t know much about bikes. Bought one for me and wife to go riding when we got a kids trailer, but 50 lbs of 2 kids was too much for us (me mostly) so we stored the bikes and gave the trailer away.

Yeah, trailers are tough. I pull one every week for the bike train with my boys to school, two riding one in the cart. We have about 20 student-riders that I guide through the town to school. I ride around 200 miles a week in season, but I rarely can get more than 25 at a time with the trailer. It’s a parachute.

On the positive, I gained around 1 mph on my time trial speed after starting to pull the trailer, haha.

I bought my mom the women’s version of that bike (6700 wsd), I think it was a 2002 model. Solid bike, all shimano Deore/LX. Rock shox Duke air fork. She still has it and still rides it.

That’s awesome! It must be the season for great deals on bikes. I actually just snagged a Specialized Hardrock Sport in December that is by far the nicest bike I have ever owned.

I used to be big into mountain biking back when I was in high school and just after, but unfortuantely as life caught up with me I drifted away from it. Still I have always wanted to get back into it again. The main problem was that it was hard to find the time being a father of three and just being so far from decent trails, but it also didn’t help that I was still riding a crappy 15 year old Trek 820.

But half of that equation changed last year when we finally moved away from our crappy old neighborhood and to one less than a mile from some decent bike trails. So I started looking for a better bike, well any bike really as I somewhat ironically sold my Trek right after we moved out of our old house.

I stumbled across the Specialized on Craigslist. He was originally asking what I felt was an extremely reasonable amount for a bike only a few years old and in fairly good shape so I hit him up. He came back with I’m tired of messing around trying to sell this thing, no-shows, and people bugging me with a million questions, if you can pick it up today $50 and it’s yours.... Needless to say I went an got it.

Don’t look at me, I’m the crazy guy dragging around three kids on two trailers... Granted one of them occasionally assists. Still I just try not to think too much about the combined weight of all of the kids and equipment.
