My next door neighbor, who moved in this fall, has the habit of parking his cars on his front lawn. Right now he has two cars sitting off of his drive-way, both covered in snow, as they haven’t moved in about 3 - 4 days.

Kinja'd!!!

It makes our neighborhood look like a used car lot. No one, and I mean NO ONE, parks their cars on their front yard. I wouldn’t mind if he parks his cars parallel with his drive, or hopped up half way off of the street, which is what many people do, as we have somewhat narrow streets, no curbs or sidewalks. But this leaving his cars in the yard, nope, not having it.

Hmmm, I can think of at least 5 people within 2 blocks on my street that have cars in their yards.

You’re going to tell your neighbor not park his cars on his own yard? That should go well. What’s plan B if he tells you to screw off?

My two cents is you may want to consider carefully which hills to die upon when it comes to neighbors.

I admit that I’d be calling Code Enforcement. If I still lived out in the boondocks then that would be one thing but not here in a residential neighborhood.

What’s the point of a yard if you can’t park cars in it?

I don’t want to be a dick about it, but, 1. it’s makes the neighborhood look bad, and 2. it’s against city code to park cars on your lawn. This isn’t the fucking boonies, or the suburbs. I live in the city, in a well established area of well kept, if modest, homes. I’m the guy that invites everyone over for a beer around my fire pit on Friday nights in the summer, and host the block party once a year. I’m going to try a nice, friendly chat about it. I’m hoping that works.

Yep, you just can’t park cars in it. It’s against city code. Park them on the drive way. Park them on the street. Park 1/2 on street, 1/2 on lawn, that’s fine. Middle of the lawn, nope. This is a residential neighborhood, not a used car lot or a junk yard.

Lemme tell you a story.

Growing up we had a neighbor. Older guy. Real nice. I would come over a few days a week and watch the Mariners game as we were both huge fans. Things chugged along, everyone seemed fine... One day my parents came home and found he had planted 6 very large trees, about 4 feet past his property line right up against the side of my parents house (these were not big lots). My dad, a man so mild mannered he goes days without speaking, knocked on his door and inquired politely what he was doing. My neighbor promptly threatened to killed my parents. Needless to say, things did not go well after that. My dad had to live next to this man for another 15 years. The trees are still there...

Don’t forget to make comments about the length of his grass while you’re over there. Why make two trips?

Once upon a time I had a driveway, but then I had a burst water line and all my gravel is now underground. Today I have either a nonrunning vehicle that’s parked in the yard or I have a driveway that doesn’t meet the city minimum gravel depth requirement.

I have chosen not to report the neighbors’ fireworks, 5am lawn mowing, unpermitted fences/sheds, most of the loose dogs, sidewalks covered in snow/ice, and houses with too many visible vehicles (you can have n+1, where n is the number of licensed drivers in the household). Hopefully they leave my yard car alone.

(I am not saying it isn’t your right to say something, just to approach things thoughtfully).

Unless you’re actively trying to sell your home, why do you care about what your neighbor does? You’re sounding like one of those HOA people.

For the record, I park my cars on my front yard all the time— I had a 96 Mustang GT parked on my front yard for a few months and nobody said a thing about it. Front yards are completely useless otherwise, especially in Arizona where they’re all gravel. Why not store cars on them? Sometimes it’s not practical to put everything on the street/driveway, especially if you have a lot of cars.

Annoyance of your neighbor having some weirdly parked cars is very minor compared to what could happen if your neighbor gets pissed at you.

Is there a good reason he parks that way?

If you were living in that house, would you do something different considering his job/schedule/car needs/available spots/car reliability?

I have a long driveway and typically wife and I park both cars in the driveway. Sometimes she is on call so she parks her car on the street so I don’t block her in.

If that’s similar case there, perhaps the cars in question don’t drive or don’t need to drive and he doesn’t want them blocking the driveway and he might come from a place that doesn’t allow cars parked on street overnight.

Who knows really. I would casually inquire about those cars on the lawn. Maybe mention that he can park on the street - cops don’t bother you if you do.

I would not tell any of my neighbors what to do. Only suggest an idea if they have not thought of one.

My town doesn’t pick up grass clippings in the summer for instance. I have a trailer. I load it up and take it to recycling center. I saw my neighbors just cut grass without bagging or removing it. It makes the grass brown at the end of summer. I asked if they recycle the clippings (not being a tree hugger, just asked if they get rid of clippings) they said no. And it turned out they didnt know about the recycling center. So I gave them the address and what permits they needed. Now they get rid of it.

I didn’t care one way or the other how their grass looked, but I felt bad when they ripped out a few bushes and had no idea what to do with them

I feel like I need to see the layout of the driveway/yard. I park my extra e30 next to my driveway sometimes. I think that doesn’t violate my city code since it is titled insured runs and drives though.

Late to this party but yeah... I wouldn’t talk to him about it. I would report it to the city instead. Dick move? Sort of, but anonymously reporting a violation gets your goals accomplished without becoming a target of some crazy bullshit.
