Most days at work, I eat lunch made from the groceries I keep in the fridge at work. But if I get an inkling, I’ll get some takeout.
Today, I got you po mian (spicy scallion noodles) with tofu from !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , which is one of those Chinese joints with both “authentic” and Americanized menus. When you get lunch they throw in a couple veggie spring rolls too. More than worth the 12 bucks.

That looks excellent. I’ve never seen tofu served like that. It looks like french fries haha.

It was excellent. Usually in my experience the good Chinese places serve tofu either in strips like this or in cubes. Depends on the dish.
The shitty junk food Chinese places cut it up in big triangular wedges and throw it in the deep fryer which makes a spongy oily disaster.

I’ve only ever had it cubed or close approximation of cubes. That being said tofu is not my first choice. Maybe it should be in light of my recent cholesterol numbers.

That looks tasty!

On its own tofu has basically no flavor, but if treated correctly becomes very tasty. The general way of doing that is to first dry it out as much as you can, then get a good crisp on it through some kind of heat/oil, then toss it with some sauce to get it nice and glazed.
I also use it to make fake scrambled “eggs,” by mashing it with my potato masher and using a few flavoring tricks (and turmeric for color).

What is this “good” chinese you speak of? I’ve only experienced strip mall levels of mediocre.

Well you see, there’s this place called China, and a billion plus people live there, and some of them come to America, and cook tasty stuff like they eat back home.

$12 bucks? Good to see NYC isn’t the only place where lunch costs an arm and a leg.

There’s eight cafes and takeout places within a five minute walk from work. It’s very hard not to spend all my money on food every day.

I need to find a good sketchy Chinese place around here in Scottsdale... so far my work lunches have consisted of a steady rotation of Panda Express, Chick Fil A, In N Out, Smashburger, Gyros, Mexican, Chipotle, Wendy’s, etc. My cholesterol must be sky-high at this point but at least I have tasty lunches every day.

I used to go out to lunch all the time but it’s a big drain on the wallet and waistline. Now I go out for lunch maybe once a week and many weeks not at all.

Yeah, I get that. I do waste a *ton* of money on food. But it gets me through the workday and gives me an excuse to leave the office for a bit since I have an hour for lunch. I’m leaving my job pretty soon though to just freelance from home, so I’ll probably save a ton of money and drop a few pounds by eating at home.
