My favorite part is still the museum level “normal” cars you see. Sure show cars can be found anywhere but who in their right mind would take care of a Geo Metro or a Toyota Echo? While terrible cars I am still more excited to see those in miraculously decent condition versus the new Lambos and such. Most cars though I honestly have no idea what they even are since I have never seen them on a road elsewhere, that always astounds me.

What gets me are the old cars. The last time I was in the same spot you guys were at, I was waiting to cross the PCH, and a pristine red ‘59 Chevy Biscayne 2 door sedan rolled by. It looked just like it did when it rolled out of the showroom - right down to the dog dishes on the steelies.

This is true in most of the affluent parts of SoCal...

I’m with you on the weird miraculously-preserved normal cars there, too. Although I think I’m in the second-best place for it, as the sun doesn’t really beat them here and rain alone doesn’t make a lot of stuff rust. On the down side, nobody here can drive, so most cars die of accidents here, not from old age (which doesn’t kill cars if someone is willing to fix them).

Yeah, we definitely want to do them regularly. I will be shooting for like every other month or so if possible. I just planned on sending out a poll next time to gauge interest while still trying to add people to the list in the mean time. Perhaps doing something like going to the Peterson or other fun drives as well. I’d really like to head up to the ACH but that is probably a bit further for most people.

It was wild just the amount of different cars that came through there in the span of an hour or so. You had your Harleys, your sport bikes, slammed classic mini trucks, ricer hondas, tuner groups of FOST/FIST/GTI, custom hot rod stuff, really classic stuff, muscle cars (both old and new) and more. My favorite though was definitely a volvo wagon that BLASTED by at like mach 10 with such an amazing sound. Best sleeper ever.

One of the ricer dudes did suggest that spambot should put a bazooka sub behind the seat in his Ferrari, I thought that was a perfect classic honda bro statement. Also another hilarious thing that happened was I was talking to one guy about drift cars and another about his Miata. And during that both guys were talking about having an “LS Miata” but meant COMPLETELY different things. Miata guy was talking about trim levels (mine is an LS) and driftking guy was talking about corvette engines in a Miata lol.

And ACH is... what? Sorry for my ignorance.

It was bright and early, around 8am (although I was definitely late). Then we got on the road around 9 and drove some fun stuff until just before 11 when we got to Neptunes Net. That allowed us to avoid all of the traffic and have the roads to ourselves basically. Then the crowds rolled into Neptunes Net and after some gawking we left there around 12 to go home. I was home by like 130 which was nice, still had plenty of day left. That was definitely best, I hate crowds and traffic.

ACH is the typical acronym for Angeles Crest Highway, or Highway 2 up in the Angeles Forest. Very different area than Malibu but still a fun place to explore. I nearly ran out of gas last time I was up there lol.

Yeah... I was barely up by the time you guys left... I’m not a morning person. At all.

But being that early it wouldn’t have worked for me because I had to be at Burbank airport to pick my mom up on the last flight in, so I would have been too tires.

Ah. Yeah, that’s a little far for me to go on a drive. Have you ever done the 154? I take that to my grandma’s, who lives up in Paso. If we could get people together we could take it Solvang and at least have a destination.

Oh yeah I have been through Solvang before. Its fun to do a drive up that way as well as do a run up Hwy 33 in Ojai. Definitely something I have to do again now that I am out here. Hopefully once more of the mudslide mess has been cleared out.

I am not really a morning person either but I am used to it since I wake up at 6 for work anyways. At least this was far more exciting than going to work lol. Moreso I just hadnt driven any car in over a week and my Miata in more than 2 weeks so it was long overdue!

I’ll have to check with my source how the 33, 150, and 154 are. I’m pretty sure CalTrans has gotten them all cleared. I think the remaining work is being done in Santa Barbara to clear areas of debris and to make sure if, or when, we get a shit ton of rain it can drain out.

I used to get up at 5:30 to take the train, but I always sleep in until at least 10 whenever I can. But I would be willing to get up at 8 or 9 to go for a drive with cool folks.

The changing time zones thing also helped me wake up. I had been two hours ahead for a week so it had been relatively easy to just keep doing that. I was waking up every day around 7 there so that was 5am Pacific time.

I am really quite worried how there hasnt been anymore rain though. It is very concerning since all of that rain last year resulted in still having such bad fires at the end of the year. I could only imagine it worsening if it just doesnt rain again.

Kinja'd!!!0

Oh, so you cheated. Nice.

It is really quite bad this year. Even the rain we got that destroyed everything wasn’t very much. The biggest problem is that Brown lifted the emergency restrictions, so everyone is back to using water like it falls from the sky.... all the time.

I don’t know if you’re part of the Casitas water district, but those who are more fucked than most because that’s our only source of water, and I believe it’s getting super low. And continually raising our rates isn’t doing shit. All it’s doing is causing people to bitch more. The state and municipalities really need to start cracking down on water wasters and also plug up all the leaks.

I found it really interesting reading about the history of the “water wars” and how that really influenced why los angeles is so gigantic and spread out.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_Water_Wars

It really makes this area seem not very hospitable for large amounts of human life. The other thing I found really interesting is how the LA river used to just go wherever it pleased, causing massive flooding before the concrete was put in. Nature is scary!

Water rights in the state are supremely fucked up. I don’t pretend to even begin to understand how the system works, or how we could possibly fix it. What do I think I know, though, is that basically the North gets most of the water, and then we send it in pipes down here. While that’s all fine and dandy most of the time, it’s certainly not right now because we don’t have enough water for everyone and their mother to have green lawns when they’re in an effing desert.

It also astounds me to see how most people waste so much water without even thinking about it. One of my sisters lives in Phoenix, and one would think that every water outlet in the house would be low flow, but you’d be wrong. And when my siblings come to my house they bitch about my low flow showers and faucets, but it pays off since my water bill is a fraction compared to my neighbors.

But home water usage is a fraction of what agriculture/industrial/commercial use is. And those are damn near unregulated because economy > environment apparently. Maybe if we didnt turn the arid desert into farmland, we would be better off (albeit a bit poorer). It is nice as like a sign of solidarity or something to not blatantly waste water but its near insignificant outside of your water bill how much you use individually. I don’t like to waste water regardless of where I am though, water is good to conserve anywhere. I do wonder what will happen one day when the droughts get worse and the area becomes more populated. Is there an unsustainable point where society collapses and we nose dive into chaos?

But every drop counts. It’s just like with fuel economy standards for passenger cars. They may represent a small percentage of global emissions, but we have to work on what we can fix, or as more often is the case, what lobbyists will allow lawmakers to fix.

I think part of the problem lies with water rights in agriculture. I remember reading that if farmers didn’t use their allocated water for the year for whatever reason, they’d have their allocation for the next year dropped because of it, so it leads farmers to just dumping water just so they can have the same allocation for the next year for new crops.

If we were to put the environment first then we wouldn’t be farming for the entire world, but I don’t think that will ever happen since the population won’t stop growing. But we also need to learn how to fix our new reality.

Kinja'd!!!
