Looks like it’s finally time to put Elizabeth v2.4 to rest as I can’t get it to work and honestly I don’t care to anymore. This time, the login screen won’t load visually: my monitor detects no input, it goes to sleep, then I can hear the Windows startup chime. System restore isn’t fixing it, and honestly, at this point I don’t care enough to reinstall Windows.
I’ve had this computer running in one form or another since 2009. Installed mostly new internals in April 2011 after Elizabeth v1.2 suffered a motherboard failure. Since the rebuild, I’ve added more RAM (4 gigs to 12 gigs), upgraded the graphics card (going from a BFG GTX260 or something to an EVGA GTX760), added a 3 TB hard drive, and installed a new cooler last summer after the original one sheered off while shipping from Toronto to Saskatoon.
Now, due to the constant issues with video card drivers, and now this final problem, I’m giving up, saying that it had a good run, and saying that it’s time to retire it. I’m going to be away from home for six months, so there isn’t much of a rush to replace it. Hopefully GPU and RAM prices come back down in the fall when I have the time to build a new machine.
So long, Elizabeth.

Nvidia drivers have been extremely flaky as of late and there’s literally no reason as to why that I can figure out. I ended up backdating myself at least 10 revisions just to keep my 960 punting out video. My stepfather’s 1030 won’t display video after waking from sleep so he has to unplug and then plug his monitor back in.

Could it just be a graphics card failure?

By any chance, are you parting Elizabeth out? I’ll see if I can put her case and GPU to good use.

Yeah. Last year, I went from the original drivers to an updated version, and it caused my screen to flash repeatedly once it booted, making it unusable. Drivers from last fall meant I couldn’t do anything other than play video games without my computer crashing. The drivers suck.

Nope, it’s a GTX760 that has always given me problems.

Most likely not. The case literally demands blood (every time someone opens it up, they get cut on something) and the GPU is probably of no interest to most.

How much for those pink filing cabinets?

Not for sale. My girlfriend would kill me.

On Linux, it’s even worse.
How about not even being able to boot, so you have to enter the recovery environment and screw around on the command line to turn on the nouveau drivers - which barely even function as is?
Thankfully the next update fixed it, but it was painfully bad.

Soooooo $50? $60?

... I prefer to let Hideo Kojima take my blood, but I might repurpose that GTX. I’LL ALWAYS FIND A WAY TO.

That sounds awful.

Dammit man, stop tempting me with your money.

Does it have an on-board card? Could you take it out and run it on the onboard video to double check that it is indeed the video card and not a motherboard issue like a failing PCI-E slot?

It’s getting hot in here!

Nope. In any case, if the motherboard was failing, I’d just do a new build anyway. No point in sticking with seven year old tech.

Maybe a Hackintosh?
Just ordered a fan for my i7 Mac Mini - it’s grinding. Tool kit to do the job cost more than the fan.

Nah, gonna go with another Windows build, probably with Ryzen 2 and whatever the newest Nvidia cards are going to be. Unfortunately, due to my line of work and the vague legality of Hackintosh machines, I don’t think I’ll be going that route. Besides, there’s nothing about OS X that makes me want to switch.

I’ve had no issues at all with the Noveau drivers?

I just saw another about how the crypto-bullshit is taking another turn for the worse, Ryzens are reported to be “great performance for mining” as well.
Guess my 3570K is living another year, unless Meltdown/Spectre patches kill it first (or if I even get them).

I don’t understand it, but hot damn has it ruined the computer market.

Nouveau drivers seem to work better on older video cards. On my grandmother’s GT 730 it was buttery smooth. On my GTX 960 it was absolute misery.

Imagine the crash following it though.... lol.
