It’s like that old joke:
Q. How much does a marriage license cost?
A. $60. And every paycheck thereafter.

I guess maybe it was already a classic, but that’s like $12,000 in 2018 dollars for a 25-year-old beat ambulance. I don’t think he got a very good deal.

Yep, his lack of knowledge was the joke. In 1984, you could buy a pretty nice car for $4800. That Caddy would have been a curiosity, but of little value - heck, without the movie, one of those wouldn’t be worth a lot even now.

On the other hand, I think they probably got a bargain on the firehouse, even if they thought it was a bad deal at the time, that had to be pretty close to the local minimum for Manhattan real-estate prices.

Yep, lots of cool cars there (though not really my style), though most of them are a bit rough when you get up close.
I assume the Ecto-1 replica has more value at getting people to look at the shop than it does as an actual car to sell to someone.

I forget what they paid for it (I remember they mortgaged a family home), but yeah, they would have hit a lottery. Something like that would probably be worth 8 figures today. I actually visited that spot several years ago, it looks just as it did in the movie, and there’s a themed mural on the sidewalk.
