Well, it could probably use a diesel swap...but it’s pretty good as is.

My concern would be whether the frame is up to the task because van and not 1-ton truck.

Needs more:

brown

shag carpet

manual

Needs less: ball joints on a solid axle?

only easy diesel swap would be the 6.2, which was- to put it mildly- a dog.

Nah...these are body on frame vans and they made a 1-ton version which probably means the frame is the same just different drivetrains and suspension . The G30 was a 1 ton van and GM switched to IFS starting in 1990 I believe so it wouldn’t have a solid front axle.

No, the GM full-size vans we re unibody. There is a fairly substantial frame element underneath them, but it’s a welded-in component.

I know there were 4x4 variants (but they’re rare) which may have had a solid axle,  I just don't know, b ut the 2wd vans were all IFS.

Wait really? I thought all the full size vans even today were body on frame? Huh. TIL

So, what I was saying? Heavy axles and stuff on the same frame?

Yea, as far as I know it would be the same frame, just heavy axles/suspension. At least that’s usually how they do these things.

The current ones are body on frame, but those old ones were unibody.  I learned that a couple years ago, and it kinda blew my mind.

When they redesigned in the mid ‘90's , they went to a body-on-frame chassis. I'm pretty sure only the third-gen G-series was unibody, although I'm fuzzier on the first two generations.

Alternatively, you could take that $$$ down to your friendly neighborhood truck dealer and use it as a down payment on a new truck w/ a 96 month loan.

Most any modern full-size truck will pull better than a 30 yr old van, even the base V6 engines will put out more powahhh than that thing.
