I have a question for Jalopnik's admins...

So... I’ve been reading and commenting on Jalopnik for at least 6 years now... and for some reason, I recently noticed that all of my new comments are grayed out like I’m some newb who hasn’t earned his stripes... I’d like to know what I could have possibly done to get kicked back into the newb zone. Further, I want back out of the newb zone. So, admins, I’m sure you have access to my account info, and know my facebook username, so please, feel free to contact me there.

Or, if anyone knows a way for me to contact the admins, please, comment below and let me know how to contact them.

Do you use an ad-blocker? Rumor has it that they have some coding in their site that detects ad blockers and it sends you back to the depths of the grays...

Actually, I do, but this is one of the sites I do not run it on because I want to support it, so I deal with the ads.

This started shortly after some dick started attacking me for making an off-hand joke about an article seeming like it would have been on Jezebel... I of course meant no disrespect to Jezebel, women, or feminists, because I support women/ feminism, but this guy wouldn’t leave me the hell alone until I finally said that further replies would be considered harassment, and that I’d report him for a TOS/Community Guidlines violation, which finally got him to stop. This guy was the aggressor, and said worse things to me than anything I said, and yet, this guy’s comments are still visible, meanwhile mine are in the newb zone. I don’t know if it’s because he flagged me, or because an admin put me back in the newb zone because of the joke, or if it even has anything to do with that thread... all I know is, I’ve seen people say worse things than anything I’ve ever said on here, and they didn’t get shoved back into the newb zone, so I don’t see why I have been shoved back into there.

Each site’s comment section seems to be governed individually by the site they’re on... so, you can be in the newb section on one, and not in the newb section on another.

I didn’t even say it was more suited for Jezebel... I just mentioned that it seemed like it would be on there. I mean, it’s not uncommon for an article to appear on say Jezebel and Gizmodo, or on Jalopnik and Kotaku (like say one about a racing game).

The logical practice when there is “something that might be of interest to the Jalopnik community that touches on other interests” would be to write the piece for another host blog and then cross-post. This would be explicitly in keeping with formerly-GMG’s stated desires to have people reading multiple blogs for their different interests. Anybody who whined about the cross-post in contravention of “disparaging other blogs” rules could be dealt with accordingly.

Instead, we have the force-feeding practice of “You Thought it Was a Jalopnik Article, But It was Me, Dio Jezebel”, and anybody taking note that this is screwy in any way is banned by Ballaban for “disparaging other blogs”. Regardless of the context, because saying that it resembles another blogs content is a criticism (technically true) and thereby that means that the other blog is a bad thing (not true, because that’s not how logic works).

Ask me why I don’t really FP these days, why don’t you.

I had this problem at one point... if you’re running browser extensions/add-ons, y ou r inability to log in might be caused by an extension/add-on. T ry this... disable an extension/add-on , reload the page, see if you can log in... if not, repeat cycle for each extension/add-on until you can either log in, or until you run out of extensions/add-ons.

I wouldn’t expect any author to spend a lot of time on this, that’s not usually their focus.

The way I understand it, the system is pretty simple as far as grey/ungrey goes. Think of it like a radio button next to your ID. Any author can click it on or off, and nobody actually looks at any of your history. If they like something you say, maybe they click it. If they don’t like something you say, maybe they unclick it. Nobody cares about history or awards or affiliations.

The super simple way to get resolution of this matter is just to directly email tips@jalopnik or one of the staff writers@jalopnik. If I had to suggest anyone it would be Torch. Show some adult restraint dealing with these children and enjoy yourself. I t should all be fine.

Any Jalopnik Author to gray someone, either intentionally or accidentally (there’s no confirmation, so hitting the wrong button is definitely possible). I don’t know which happened to you, but in your place I’d probably just be glad I wasn’t banned instead (which can also easily be done accidentally or on purpose), and figure you’ll get out of the grays again eventually. It’s normally easier on Jalopnik than on some of the other sites.

It’s probably your browser privacy settings. You need to have 3rd party cookies enabled from everywhere.

Kinja uses a cookie from @kinja.com to track your login info, regardless of what site you’re on. That’s why you can log in to oppositelock.kinja.com with 3rd party cookies disabled , but not jalopnik.com.

Just remember to disable it when you log out. That way you’re not tracked everywhere else you browse by Facebook, Youtube, Google, Pornhub, Amazon, JG Wentworth, and whoever else is paying or getting paid to track you .
