Huge rain/windstorm here last night. Our basement flooded...$22k+CAD in damage to the floors/walls, etc, let alone our stuff. All the floors have to be ripped up and replaced as well as possibly a lot of the walls from water soaking into the gyprock. My brother’s several thousand dollar gaming desktop PC may be screwed, though mine might be OK...no idea...insurance will cover up to $22k, but hell knows how much more is going to be needed. My brother and I both live at home right now until we get permanent full time jobs somewhere...mom is retired, but all the extra money we’ll likely have to now spend on top of that was supposed to be for her retirement....

Yes, we’re not dead and we can still live here and it’ll all get repaired so those are obviously two huge pluses, but at this moment I am feeling incredibly depressed, stressed, exhausted (we’ve been cleaning and whatnot since 7am this morning straight) and as unmanly as it may sound, on the verge of tears...it’s just a lot to take in. 6-8 weeks the restoration company estimates, 2 MONTHS before life can have some semblance of normalcy again and I somehow have to keep going to work and all that jazz and then come home to this and keep working at helping clean and sort it all...

I dunno...just needed to rant guys/gals. You probably won’t see me on here that much for awhile...unless you do if I come on as a means of escape when and if I have the time...

I just don’t know and feel so lost and upset. Thanks for listening.

Dang dude that is rough. Hang in there, it may take a while but it will get better. We're all hear to help. Hell, cry. It's not unmanly when you got that much stress going on.

Sorry, man. That really sucks. Was the flooding so bad the drain didn’t do squat?

Thanks. It’s starting to dry down there, but only half the floor in the rec room is up...the floor still has to be removed in the hallway and a lot of things still need to be taken out of the rec room, the downstairs bathroom (which was not a completed bathroom, so was essentially another storage room) and the ‘storage room’ which is our furnace room / room we also put crap in. We haven’t even TOUCHED the furnace room at all yet. Got some out of the bathroom.....no furniture removed yet. It’s all overwhelming. No idea how I’ll sleep tonight.

I sometimes think I just should just build myself one of those tiny homes and live in that...

Two drains, one outside the basement door and one in the floor in the storage room. Nobody knows what happened, but a lot of rain in a short time, so thinking they were either clogged and backed up or couldn’t deal with the amount of water that quickly.

A basement saved my cousin from a tornado and they are nice and cool in the summer, I guess it depends on where you live.

Oppo-Road trip to descend upon RallyDarkstrike’s domicile for massive repair operation?

I want to buy 3 or 4 acres and build something like this on it. 3 car garage with an apartment above.

Maybe a TAD far for most of you, heh. Thanks though. I’m feeling a little better now, although still really lost and exhausted. The restoration company was here and started work...2 huge dehumidifiers and like....5 industrial drying fans running d ownstairs. No idea how I am going to sleep with all the thoughts in my head let alone that noise, but I’m heading to bed in a few to try as there’s nothing else I feel like doing tonight.

They got half the floor / baseboards ripped up in the rec room, but none of the furniture has been removed from there yet (just all slid to one side) and they haven’t even started on the sub-floor yet (it has to be ripped out down to bare concrete). The hallway, bathroom (as mentioned to somebody else earlier, it’s an unfinished bathroom, so we only use it as a storage room) and ‘storage room’ as we call it (the furnace/hot water tank room that we also use for storage) hasn’t been touched yet at all repair wise. We’ve emptied some stuff out of the bathroom and hallway and the hallway closets (4 of them...) but a LOT has to be done yet and it all just seems daunting.

Thanks man, no idea how it will go, but the restoration company seems pretty competent, albeit a bit slow. Then again, they had like 5 other places all day since 5am, so I imagine they were exhausted.

It just seems like a constant moisture problem. Maybe they are safe in the desert.

My sister went on vacation a couple summers ago and decided she’d turn the basement AC off for the week to save some electricity. She came back and everything was covered in mold and had to be thrown away.

Maybe, but I guarantee that you say the word, and we’d arrive in a weird caravan reminiscent of a mad max caravan in search of water (damage).

Ohh that’s rough. Intimate natural disasters tend to be the hardest things to deal with because you think your the only ones that got toasted and the rest of the world gives not a shit.

While that is generally true...it is not universal. Plenty of people care or are at least empathetic to your situation. Any true Oppo reading your story certainly would be...even if they aren’t in a position to do much physical to help.

Good luck with the clean up and repair. And the rest of us should take a good, imaginary look around our places to make sure they have better resilience in the face of such events.

After all...it can happen. We had a bushfire start and spread rapidly on Friday only a few kilometres away from our mostly unprepared house with not much water available for fire fighting...

Hey dude, I'm sorry to hear about all this. It'll be really tough on you, but you sound like a guy who can make it through this. And don't worry about not being manly for being on the verge of tears, because that's a bullshit way of thinking. If you need support, give me a shout.

I’ve definitely been there. Not flooding so much but been at that point where you feel like that’s just all the bad luck you can take. And when it’s time sensitive it’s absolutely  the worst. Hang in there, take some of it out on the stuff you need to destroy (flooring, etc) and keep stopping by here to escape when you need it. And let us know if you need that caravan, though you sure as hell don’t want me hanging drywall.

Lucky that fire didn’t get nearby or you could’ve lost everything. It’s all perspective, just feeling a little depressed at the start of it.

The restoration crew should be here soon this morning to get more done, so hopefully I can help them work quickly. I’m a substitute teacher so I deliberately took no jobs today so I can stay home and help out, though I am scheduled 2 days a week every Tues and Thursday at a school on a term position, so I can’t say no to that. Mom’s 69 and a single parent from when we were 14 or so with a bad back, so she can’t do much to help them. If I can to try an keep costs down a bit, I will, though I’ll be pretty exhausted.

You folks are all an awesome lot, so I thank you all for that. It’s nice to just have somewhere I can come to try and escape the chaos at the moment. Eating my breakfast now, then I’ll get to work soon...

Oh no! We had are basement flood before, not nearly as bad as your dealing with. It does take a lot of work but it’ll eventually be finished, take breaks as needed (physical and mental).

How did the furnace fare? Heading into winter hopefully it wasnt damaged.

Furnace is fine, luckily...the water had to only have been 2-3 inches deep at the most, but it’s the cost of repairing the floors and walls that is going to kill us...coupled with the fact they’ve found a few other things we never knew about from before we bought the place that will need to be done...

The house is a minefield right now. Can barely live upstairs, all the dry stuff from downstairs was moved into any available space up here...
