1973, it’s a old as I am. Back when Grumman American had flight schools. Back when learning to fly was pretty darn cheap compared with today, even corrected for inflation.
Sittin’ in the loft where my wife works at her desk and I get distracted at mine , cleaning out the piles of things I’ve ignored for the last six months. I found this in my flight instructors office about twenty years ago. Kept it. Today I took it out of the sleeve, spun it around, and completely forgot how to use it . Rules of thumb and FMS flight computers rule my world today. I didn’t learn on this CR3 style of slide rule . I learned on the E6B. I see one of these currently for sale on Ebay f or $50.
There are a lot of matchings to make it work. Put two known variables together on the outer rim, and look around the inner circles to see the answers. The speed arrow to your speed, look fro distance outside and under it is the time to travel that. Simple things. But quick and effective. In a way I miss the simple things but in no way do I really wish to live within them again.

Buddy of mine is a retired Navy P3 pilot and he has one made of aluminum. Very spiffy.

Got. E a fancy aluminum one as I wanted to learn the hard way before I started relying solely on the iPad.
And you’re right, something happened with the cost of flying that went beyond inflation. Used to be, average schlubs could afford to fly, now it’s it’s expensive all around...

I live those. I have a fairly basic one around here somewhere. Cool bit of history that I don’t know how to use

First hit was after Katrina and av gas went from 2.50 to over $5 a gallon, making any plane horribly expensive. When 12 gallong/hour now cost $60/hr, rental rates went up 50%. Then general inflation hit. So $1 of 2003 money is worth $1.50 today. Correcting for inflation, the cost of all my college aviation from nothing to CFI is about +60% on top of what I paid. It sucks!

I have an E6B slide version in aluminum. Those were trick. I know a few guys who used to hot rod theirs so they could whip the disc around and get really fast with it one handed. A bit of 2 in 1 oil on the center, some polish here and there....

Recon so. That changes the hourly I pay on a Warrior II from $140 to $85 and my instructor from $72 to $48/hr so that checks out...
