After rumours that Delta may rescue it s SkyTeam partner, by buying a chunk of it, Delta CEO declined to comment on the matter.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
I think it’s an effort to keep Alitalia in SkyTeam(after Air France - KLM dropped the idea of saving Alitalia), because Lufthansa taking control of the Italian carrier would also see them switching to Star Alliance.

For decades various partners have tried to save Alitalia, and m y only question is ‘W hy? ’ Is it really worth it? Like Swissair and Sabena (amongst others), perhaps it’s time to let this critically ill patient die and let something new spring up in its place. If the whole idea is to preserve your alliance, you have to question the health of said alliance if dumping several hundreds of millions of dollars into a perpetual loser is what is required...

They should merge and change their name to Al Delte.

Sounds like the European Union.

If one of your family members is sick, do you help them out or shoot them in the face?

Alitalia’s beyond saving, and has been for years. It’s unions will create untold problems, and that’s before you get into the
corporate/government
corruption and strong (and increasing)
mafia influence
in many parts of
Italy. As Alitalia stands s
hooting it
in the face would be a mercy killing. Delta isn’t thinking clearly unless it will move most of
Alitalia out of Italy
and base it in another EU state.

All I could think of when I saw that was this old Saturday Night Live fake ad:

If it’s a cold or the flu, I help them. If it’s stage IV lung or colon cancer, as friends and family have experienced, you do what you can and then get them into hospice when the inevitable takes its course . Alitalia has been on life support for years, and at some point you have to pull the plug and donate the organs.
Alitalia is a company, and not a person or a nation and therefore, dare I say it, not worth the same efforts to save it. Is there really a social role to a company that makes it worth saving? I thought the days of the government run company with the primary purpose of employing people were over.
Tell me - in your honest opinion, why should Alitalia be saved? Other than an illustrious history, what do they offer to their target market?

From the SkyTeam point of view, Alitalia is valuable because it’s their only member left in that region, after A egean preferred Star Alliance. For the people of Italy, Alitalia is sometimes the only choice on less busy, less profitable routes. For the Italian government, it’s a matter of national pride. For your average world traveler, it’s another choice on routes to Italy. Nobody would really win if Alitalia collapses. Except for Quatar backed Air Italy.

Do you have any experience flying with Swiss air? or j us t their overall business

No first-hand experience flying with them, but I was a business analyst in the airline industry for years. Swissair wasn’t a customer of mine, but Swiss, the follow on a carrier when Cross air stepped up to do the international flights left vacant by the defunct national carrier, was.
The only memorable experience I had with SR was being right next to the runway as an SR MD-11 l lost an engine on takeoff, scaring the crap out of me when it exploded. I did have my scanner on and listened to all of the communications until the aircraft returned. Pilots were totally unfazed at the whole scenario and treated it like it was routine. That's what proper training gets you.
