Is this a good idea or an absolutely terrible one?
Spam control would relatively simple. Just make it so you can only PM another user if you BOTH have comment/author privileges in the same forum.

It would eliminate the need to post your email address for the world to see if you want to get in touch with another Oppo offline, which would be great . But it would also open everyone up to incessant junk PMs.

I’d love to have it for chatting with locals more smoothly, but I can also envision huge exploitation for harassment by most Kinja sites that are more like an insane asylum.

YES
As in, yes it’s a good idea AND yes it’s an absolutely terrible one.

I’d love it, but also yikes.

BINGO. It is possible it could drive away users due to harassment
.

I still don’t think that would be enough to solve it. A lot of kinja blogs are truly messed up places. Oppo is an oddball outlier where pretty much everyone is cool. I’d even be reluctant to allow most Jalopnik commenters to message me.

Both.

Then we make it like authorship where you have to be approved for PMing.

It’s a bad idea because of harassment potential. I think the major good use case is sending your email address to somebody. To that end, I’d support a setting in your kinja profile for email (if there isn’t one already), and then the ability to send someone a canned message generated by the system that says essentially “hey I’d like to get in touch outside of Kinja, here’s my email address.”

I’ve used google+ for this in the past. I have a handshake email that I give to people and then we can connect with my regular email. Seems to work but its a little clunky. plus with G+ going away...

We used to have this feature back in J-nik’s old days. It was kinda nice.

Dude Kinja hasn’t even yet figured out how to help me remove followers that are obviously spam accounts without a song and dance.
With a proper featureset and permissions granularity, why not. Assuming it doesn’t grind their entire site to a halt.

I miss the days when Max & Erma’s had phones at each table and you could call random strangers. (Yes, I’m old.) Of course they eventually had to kill that due to harassment.
People being people: it ruins everything .

Everything already grinds Kinja to a halt. What's a little more fuel on the dumpster fire gonna do?

It would occasionally be convenient but mostly it would open people up to harassment and unwanted messages. And I'm saying that after reading the update.

Well, in order to be snarky on car blogs, it has to load first, so it would probably drive me back to -ugh- reddit.

If there is an Opponaut that I want to contact off the grid, I’ll share my email @ with them. Otherwise, I prefer the wall.

With spam control methods in place it would be awesome. :)

I loved those! We used to go to the one on Michigan Rd. near 86th. They all broke down over time though, and never fixed them.

I’ve thought about this before. It would be cool and would promote community. Of course, it could also be abused for shenanigans. It would only work, I think, for a forum like Oppo that can be relatively controlled. Having PMs for the main Kinja blogs would be a nightmare.

I made another Gmail account just for OPPO.

Not a bad idea. I once had to send another member my phone number, broken up into three replies scattered through random replies of his. They all showed up in order in his notifications. I could do this back then because your replies were not public, only your posts. Can’t do that any more.

DMs will never happen, though. There’s no money in it, and Gawker needs money to develop/host this.

I have two email addresses. The second one is used exclusively for stuff like making online accounts so my main inbox isn't full of spam. The few times I've needed to contact another Opponaut I just post that second email.

Good option.

Maybe a “friend ” system then , so both parties have to be in mutual agreement to DM each other.

Maybe. We have to remember that Oppo is just a small fraction of kinja, so we’re talking about implementing this stuff on Deadspin, Jezebel, and all the others. Plenty of people on those sites with commenting privileges don’t get along.
