Kinja'd!!!4 Kinja'd!!! 38

long story short, i blew my 2.0 focus st motor at about 59700 miles. i had been autocrossing it every other weekend for four years, doing tracks days and otherwise driving the shit out of it. i took driver of the year with it last year after upgrading the turbo mid season and this spring it gave up and broke two ring lands one on 1 and one on 4. i had speedperformance in new jersey build me with my old block a stage 1 2.3 stroker which consists of a 2.3 mustang crank with balance shaft gear removed, manley connecting rods and 4032 mahle pistons. they used clevite bearings and installed heavy rate valve springs since power would be available through redline. i was held back by my high pressure fuel pump which couldn’t  keep up with my turbo which is a garret gen 2 2867r. car is amazing now you quite the flat power curve and quite a large power band. full boost at 21psi at 3000-7000 rpms 364whp,362 wtq. car pulls like a freight train...car was dynoed on friday last week. i also rescued leopold yesterday so i have a new kitten!

That’s pretty awesome. Exactly what I would do if I blew my motor.

It's been a while since I've seen a gas motor with a torque curve that flat...that looks like fun.

That sounds like a very natural progression of skill and horsepower.  Race safe.

Wow that’s gotta be a rocket. Motor has to easily be making 400 HP.

Looks at Boss 302 making 450 with not much more torque.

Dammit!

Why remove the balance shafts while going with a bigger displacement ?  Rule of thumb is that anything over 2.0 liters will need them.  Though I guess you don’t care much about NVH, so maybe you won’t shake yourself silly.

so i was actually pretty concerned about the vibrations. this shop is afraid the balance shaft will blow up when making more power (RSs have been having them blow up and take out the motor) and removes about 16#s from the nose and most of that weight is rotating so combined with a single mass  steel flywheel that’s about 10#s less, the car revs very quick and the rev hang is gone. all this and i believe there is no discernible difference in nvh. the assembly being balanced helps i think but i’m seriously impressed with how little if any vibrations i have at idle, once you are moving it’s not noticeable anyways.

so i just read about it in wikipedia and the balancing of components has little or nothing to do with it, but like it said it runs great!

That’s crazy power out of such a small engine. You have about 100 % more HP and 25 % more torque than the v8 in my land cruiser.

Right, they should be balanced.  It has more to do with the weight of the pistons and rods.  Rule of thumb was anything more than a 2.0, just because of the size and then weight.  So if you got some good components that don’t weight much more than stock, or even less, you should be fine.

i think the pistons are lighter but the connecting rods are twice as big.  the factory stuff is puny.

Nothing NEEDS balance shafts except for NVH reasons. It’s purely an NVH component, and more specifically, one required for inline engines at what I refer to as ‘mass production tolerances.’

Generally speaking, an inline engine running at much tighter tolerances (this build isn’t one of those) can safely delete balance shafts without compromising NVH. Not talking about rotating assembly balance, I’m talking whole package, primarily focused on firing order, fuel delivery, fuel burn, and pulse.

Curve l ooks almost exactly like my LS2 GTO when it just had headers! With 40% the displacement and a lot less weight (and a little MORE low end torque) . Damn impressive!

Eh, it’s more a firing order and pulse thing. The AMC 2.5 doesn’t have balance shafts (they weren’t invented by Mitsubishi until 1975, and AMC never licensed.) And it’s a very smooth engine by most measures.

Balance shafts basically became a shortcut - particularly in FWD applications - to reduce engineering costs. It’s not an invalid one either, since the parasitic is easily minimized. It’s still very difficult to design a 4 cylinder to run that kind of smoothly, especially with the demands for increased power every year.

really well except for cold start misfires. as soon as i start moving they stop but always cylinder 4. moved plugs and coil packs around to no luck. i’ll try moving the injectors if i get a warm day or some garage space. it almost seems like a sensitivity issue with the crank sensor. i did the bsd and light weight flywheel so rotating mass is down and clutch applications show as misfires which is funny.  once it’s warm they stop at idle, almost completely.  new problem today though, it’s runs too cold both oil and water with the new radiator.  very fast though and the power pulls and pulls hard to redline...

Awesome on the speed and power. No t stat or too low of a temp ? Do your data logs show corrections for your fueling? Msd coils or better harmonic dampr?

https://www.cjponyparts.com/msd-coil-packs-red-set-focus-st-2013-2018-focus-rs-2016-2018/p/COILP29/

Cheaper and easier to install than a damper.

What motor oil as well, not a lspi event is it?  Is your car yanking timing as well?

So it’s a stock thermostat, brand new with the engine build and it was 19degrees outside.  i have done a bunch of cooiling mods such as intercooler and radiator shrouding, oil cooler and mountune 3 pass radiator.  I’m going to try covering my grill with some kydex.  Never thought about changing the coilpacks with aftermarket ones...with the new motor i literally replaced everything hanging from or bolted to the engine.

so i run rotella t6 which is heavier than the factory weight oil.  Car isn’t pulling timing except for a few events on occasion, it’s usually allowing advance.  i’m going to datalog my start up today and check the fueling.  I don’t believe it’s a lspi event, there is no load or boost on the motor.

no it passed emissions and hiccups a bit before it warms up and then once warm it’s totally smooth and misfire free.  i’m gonna change oil today from the rotella to an sn+ rated oil and see if it helps.
