Public school sex ed can go screw itself.

So, I’ve been hesitant to post about this for a couple weeks, but here goes: I more than likely have HPV. The good news? The strains that cause warts are not the cancerous ones, and that’s what I have. And what does this have to do with sex ed? Well, they blatantly lie to kids and I’m absolutely pissed. When I first noticed a bump down there, I seriously thought it was the end of the world. I had been taught in school that all STDs are dangerous and permanent. Neither of those are the case with [ most forms of] HPV. I also could have benefitted from hearing that more than half of everyone will come down with this at some point in their life. ( According to Planned Parenthood, that number is 80% for women and 50% for men)

So... yeah. If you’re young and inexperienced in life like I am, here’s the important thing to take from this: genital warts are virtually harmless, and the infection will go away within two years in almost every case. So I’m like..... 4% of the way there.

That said, I’m still getting checked out. ( and you should, too, if you ever show symptoms)

be prepared to deal with them the rest of your life, for some the virus goes dormant but not everyone experiences that. It’s a nuisance for sure, and you’ll feel ways about disclosure but in the end anyone worth it won’t be put off.

Also worth noting they need to stop stigmatizing the vaccine.  Because there is a vaccine and the earlier you get it the better.

Adam ruins everything covered that in a sex episode, it’s worth watching if you have Netflix.

Back when I was in high school, the sex ed we got there was also complete bullshit. But that was also partly due to it being a Catholic high school.

I got my real sex ed by listening to the Sunday Night Sex Show with Sue Johanson... who is a registered nurse and understands the medical side of things and just just make up bullshit.

These days, just read up stuff on her website:

She also wrote some books:

I got the vaccine. It should be more utilized than it is. HPV is incredibly common but not talked about.

One of two subjects at school where they tell you what they want you to know instead of what you need to know...

My best friend caught some of those thing-thangs some years back. Went to the doctor and he was lucky you have caught the strain that went away in a few months, no issues since. I didn't KNOW there were temporary genital herpes. Hope yours are...

I bet kids would pay more attention if the education material included more flaming weiners. Perhaps a demonstration involving a torch.

My kids just turned 13 and got their second HPV inoculation. Vaccines FTW.

My middle schoolers had sex ed. One of them came home and said, “They basically told us that if you have sex you will die.”

Great.

I’ve gotten HPV but on the sole of one foot and a bit later on a fingertip. The ones on feet are called plantar warts. Mine were quite stubborn and wouldn’t go away, though I probably wasn’t helping by digging into them with a knife every few days.

Anyway, I read about ‘duct tape occlusion therapy,” which is a long technical term for slapping duct tape over the warts. It worked suspiciously well . Within a week of applying duct tape to them, all the warts were gone. Haven’t come back either, and this was about 4 years ago.

I think BHT works on that virus, too

Yeah, I got the first part of it but my parents forgot to take me in to finish it. Hopefully that somehow makes mine go away faster or something.

eh, that’s not universal. I went to a Catholic grade/middle school, and they didn’t feed us any bullshit.  IIRC they actually had folks from the county health department run the class.

which is good, because do you think my parents shouldered any of that responsibility?
