I can’t get behind the bastardization of Far Side.

No Friday for me today! I have to work the weekend, anyway so I guess I’ll just get on the road and lament what could have been.

I’m not sure that bastardization rises to the level of dickbuttization .

I hope it’s productive, though, your work. For my part, in my classroom, I’m giving the kids a worksheet and calling a Quiet Friday , where the deal is, they look like they are working -- and a number of them genuinely will -- and I sit at my desk and do meaningful things like make animated gifs and dickbutt cartoons for Oppositelock.

I’m lucky that the work I do will touch thousands of people, although the vast majority will never know it.

That is, when I’m not goofing around on Oppo.

Even though you’re ruining Far Side, at least you’re helping kids grow into mature, well-rounded adults, right?

I am lucky enough to do a lot of different things. Right now I’m representing a local government agency on the Public Assistance projects following Hurricane Harvey. Basically, I help the agency identify damages, develop the repair projects, and work as their liaison with FEMA to make sure the local agency does everything correctly to qualify for compensation . Most people don’t know that the disaster recover funding from FEMA doesn’t cover all of the repairs. So, I help the local agency identify alternate funding sources and apply for assistance to meet the cost match requirements.

I’ll probably be reassigned to Florida for a few weeks to help stand up a team doing disaster recovery over there. On the front end, projects have to be identified and documented. I have some software experience, so I helped develop an application which inspectors use to collect field data and designed the back-end processes for managing that data and creating the required reports. Once that team is  rolling, I’ll go back to Houston and start managing repair projects.

Are you a consultant/contractor? Also: what schooling? (I don’t want to trade jobs with you, BTW...)

Consultant. Various schooling, but the Ph.D. is related to regional planning with a focus on disaster planning . I taught for several years before going private sector. Most people come into this with engineering or finance/account degrees. No need for a doctorate. I may go back and teach someday if I get burned out with all the travel.

No need to be impressed! It’s what a lot of determination and debt will get you. I don’t recommend a Ph.D. for anyone who doesn’t really, really need it for their field or who isn’t aiming to teach at the university level. I learned the hard way that I’m not interested in teaching and doing research in the current university climate. The straw that broke me was the university defending a student who I caught cheating. The kid said something about a lawsuit and the committee members flinched. I left at the end of that semester.
